A federal appeals court on Thursday allowed President Donald Trump to continue collecting tariffs under an emergency powers law for now, as his administration appeals an order striking down the bulk of his signature set of economic policies. The Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit granted an emergency motion from the Trump administration arguing that a halt is “critical for the country’s national security.” The appeals court temporarily halted the order from a federal trade court issued a day before. Trump is facing several lawsuits arguing Trump’s “Liberation Day” tariffs exceeded his authority and left the country’s trade policy dependent on his whims.
Hamas said on Thursday that it does not accept the outline for US envoy Steve Witkoff's ceasefire and hostage deal proposal at face value, and has demanded certain changes, according to sources familiar with the details. A source familiar with the details told The Jerusalem Post that Hamas feels deceived by the US administration, believing it has been "screwed over" with a pro-Israel proposal that does not guarantee an end to the war. The proposal also requires all hostages to be returned to Israel within a week, leaving Hamas without further leverage. A source close to Hamas told Walla that the group claimed the new proposal is more biased in favor of Israel than previous proposals and that Witkoff accepted most of the demands presented by R...
Tel Aviv, Israel - May 29, 2025 - Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said during a meeting with family members of bereaved hostages on Thursday that Israel has agreed to the new framework for a deal proposed by US Envoy Steve Witkoff. However, the Prime Minister expressed doubt regarding Hamas's intentions: "Hamas has yet to respond. We don't believe that Hamas would return the last hostage, and therefore, we continue fighting until Hamas is eliminated, and we will not leave the Gaza Strip until all the hostages are in our hands." During the meeting, the families asked how it would be determined which deceased hostages would be returned in the deal. They were answered that a decision has not been made yet on the matter, and as far as Israel is concerned, "all deceased hostages h...

Annapolis, MD - May 29, 2025 - A second bond-rating agency has reaffirmed its highest credit rating for Maryland, helping offset a downgrade by a third agency just weeks before a scheduled $1.7 billion bond sale by the state. The AAA rating from Standard & Poor’s follows a similar rating from Fitch two weeks ago. Standard & Poor’s — one of three firms that Maryland hires to rate its creditworthiness in advance of annual bond sales — issued its rating with a stable outlook for the state, but also with a warning. “The stable outlook reflects our expectation that the state will make timely adjustments to achieve a structural balance and adequate cash reserves by proactively managing economic and budgetary risks that arise,” the report sa...
A Michigan man who allegedly yelled antisemitic threats at families entering a synagogue in 2022 pleaded guilty Tuesday to the charge of being a felon in possession of a firearm, according to the Department of Justice. In December 2022, Hassan Chokr, 37, of Dearborn, Michigan, drove through the parking lot of Temple Beth El in the Detroit suburb of Bloomfield Hills as parents walked their preschoolers into the building, and yelled a series of antisemitic threats at them, according to federal prosecutors. After he was asked to leave, Chokr — who had a prior felony conviction for a different offense in 2017 — went to a gun store in Dearborn where he attempted to purchase three guns: a shotgun, a rifle and a semi-automatic pistol. He lied about his criminal record, according to ...

The struggle to settle our sacred homeland continues. Nearly eighty years after the founding of Medinat Yisrael, and despite our yearning to live in peace with our neighbors, many still deny our rightful presence in this land. The Simchat Torah war of the past year and a half is not a new chapter, but a continuation of the War of Independence—a painful reminder that our national legitimacy remains under attack and that violent antisemitism still burns fiercely. Yet something fundamental has shifted: the ideological foundations of this conflict have changed. In 1948, opposition to our return was driven by pan-Arab nationalism—a political vision seeking to unify all Arab peoples under a single identity, both cultural and territorial. In their eyes, the emergence of a Jewish stat...
Yearning for Meaning Hashem created every one of the world’s eight billion people with a yearning for meaning. Although we all know that we are merely one of billions, we want to feel that our lives matter, that we mean more than just “the average Joe.”      The Day the Torah Was Given Chag Shavuot teaches us how to channel this existential yearning. Shavuot is the only chag besides Sukkot that the Torah associates with the mitzvah of simchah.[1] The Gemara[2] understood this Shavuot commandment as requiring specifically physical celebration. While many believe that other chagim should be celebrated with spiritual delights, everyone agrees that Shavuot requires physical celebration. Interestingly, the Gemara links this requirement to the fact that Shav...
