Fabric and crafts retailer Joann Inc., which has been a destination for generations of quilters, knitters and lovers of crafts projects for 80 years, is going out of business and shuttering all its stores. The announcement comes after the Hudson, Ohio-based retailer filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in January, the second time in a year. It cited sluggish consumer demand and inventory shortages. At the time it vowed it would keep all of its stores open. But earlier this month, Joann said it planned to close 500 stores — or more than half of its nationwide footprint. The company said on Sunday that after a recent auction, financial services company GA Group, together with Joann's term lenders, were selected as the winning bidder to "acquire substantially...

For months, Hamas leaders have defended the militant group’s decision to launch the October 7, 2023, attack on Israel, despite the devastating Israeli offensive that followed, killing tens of thousands of Palestinians and leaving Gaza in ruins. While Hamas has declared "victory" and vowed to carry out similar attacks in the future, one of its top officials is now expressing reservations. Mousa Abu Marzouk, head of Hamas’s foreign relations office in Qatar, told The New York Times that he would not have supported the attack had he known the extent of the destruction it would bring to Gaza. “If it was expected that what happened would happen, there wouldn’t have been October 7,” he said. Abu Marzouk, 74, who was not informed of the specific plans but...

Dr. Darius Irani, chief economist for the Regional Economic Studies Institute at Towson University, spoke with Spotlight on Maryland on Saturday about the governor’s $67.3 billion budget plan.
There are certainly some pieces in there that I think would help Maryland,” Dr. Irani said. “I think one of the challenges Maryland has faced throughout is oftentimes, the first tool that we will pull out of the toolbox is the tax.”
Gov. Moore’s budget calls for...

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said at a press conference in Kyiv on Sunday he would be willing to resign from his post in exchange for peace in Ukraine or NATO membership. “If it is peace for Ukraine, and if you really want me to leave my post, I’m ready,” Zelenskyy said in Ukrainian. “Alternatively, I can trade this for NATO membership, if such conditions exist, immediately, so we don’t have lengthy discussions. I’m focusing on Ukraine’s security today, not in 20 years. And I don’t intend to stay in power for decades.” Zelenskyy’s offer is a major concession amid an ongoing public dispute with President Donald Trump, which escalated last week when Trump suggested that the Ukrainian president was respons...
