US President Donald Trump said that Jordan and Egypt should take more Palestinians from Gaza when he spoke to reporters on Saturday.  Trump said he spoke about the matter with Jordan's King Abdullah on the phone earlier in the day and told him that the Gaza Strip is currently a "real mess." He said that he told King Abdullah during the call, "I’d love you [Jordan] to take on more because I’m looking at the whole Gaza strip right now, and it’s a mess, it’s a real mess. I’d like him to take people." "I’d like Egypt to take people," Trump also said to the reporter. He added that he planned on speaking to Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi on Sunday. The phone call with King Abdullah came on the same day that second prisoner...

A Palestinian prisoner set to be released on Saturday's hostage-prisoner exchange refused to board the bus to Gaza, KAN News reported. Originally, two prisoners - who were being held at Israel's Ktzi'ot Prison - refused to be released as part of the deal with Hamas. However, one was ultimately persuaded and returned to Gaza, KAN added. The other, however, remained and was replaced with another prisoner.  The prisoner was a senior Fatah official and preferred to stay in prison than return to Gaza, Ynet reported.  Israel released 200 terrorist prisoners on Saturday in exchange for four female soldiers. Naama Levy, Liri Elbag, Daniella Gilboa, and Karina Ariev had been held in Hamas captivity for 477 days before returning to Israel as...

A fourth case of bird flu was confirmed this week on a Maryland chicken farm, but state health and agriculture officials told lawmakers Friday that the situation, while concerning, is still manageable — at the moment. The remarks came during a briefing for the House Environment and Transportation Committee on Friday, just two days after the latest case was discovered on an Eastern Shore commercial farm. “We’re concerned, but we feel that we have the ability to respond appropriately to reduce the risk,” Agriculture Deputy Secretary Steven Connelly said after the 45-minute hearing. Bird flu had not been detected in the state since late 2023, but that changed in January when the Maryland Department of Agriculture announced the discovery of the first case on Jan. 14 ...
When a reporter framed a question Thursday with a line often used by Gov. Wes Moore (D) — that the state can’t simply cut its way to prosperity — Sen. Justin Ready (R-Carroll and Frederick) laughed out loud. That was essentially the message from House and Senate Republicans on the Moore administration’s proposed fiscal 2026 budget: Despite billions in reported tax cuts and program reductions, the plan “is still a massive tax-and-spend budget,” they said. “I don’t think you can say we’re cutting,” said House Minority Leader Jason Buckel (R-Allegany). “Any attempt to couch this as a tax-cut budget is simply inaccurate.” He was backed by about 20 GOP legislators who gathered to criticize the administration’s $67....
President Donald Trump fired the inspectors general from more than a dozen federal agencies in a Friday night purge, according to a Trump administration official, paving the way for him to install his own picks for the independent watchdog roles. Agency inspectors general received an email late Friday from Sergio Gor, the head of the White House Office of Presidential Personnel, informing them that “changing priorities” had led to their positions being “terminated” effective immediately, according to a person familiar with the matter. The shake-up affected a broad swath of the federal government, including the departments of State, Energy, the Interior, Defense and Transportation. During Trump’s first term, he gutted his administration of independe...
BJL apologizes for not posting this on Erev Shabbos: The Torah describes how with the outstretched hand of Aharon all the bodies of water turned into blood, adding, 'even in the wood and stone'. Rashi based on the Targum interprets it to refer to water sitting in wooden and stone vessels. What about earthen, clay or metal vessels? Why specifically wood and stone? The Midrash explains the verse, not in the context of 'vessels' containing water, but rather to their wooden and stone idols of worship which now bled. The same question begs, were their idols only fashioned from wood and stone? What of their gods of silver and gold? Why did this specific plague from among all the others strike their idols as well? Water serves two basic purposes. It is the basis of all ...
The first aliyah of this week’s parsha contains the famous 4 terms of redemption that are a prominent theme on the seder night. There is an intriguing nuance between the first and last of the four terms, discussed by R’ Yoseif Salant in Be’er Yoseif. We are told (6:6) “vehotzeisi eschem mitachas sivlos Mitzrayim,” I will extricate you from the hardships of Egypt. In the very next pasuk, we are told following the fourth term, “velakachti,” that we will know that it is HaShem who took us out “mitachas sivlos Mitzrayim.” The repetition of this phrase in the adjacent pasuk is odd enough on its own. But it is made even more curious by the fact that the first sivlos is writ...
The Senate confirmed Kristi Noem as homeland security secretary on Saturday, putting the South Dakota governor in charge of a sprawling agency that is essential to national security and President Donald Trump's plans to clamp down on illegal immigration. Republicans kept the Senate working Saturday to install the latest member of Trump's national security team. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth was confirmed in a dramatic tie-breaking vote Friday night, joining Secretary of State Marco Rubio and CIA Director John Ratcliffe. The Senate will next vote Monday evening on Scott Bessent's confirmation as treasury secretary. Noem, a Trump ally who is in her second term as governor, received some support from Democrats on the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committe...
The Senate narrowly voted to confirm embattled Pete Hegseth as secretary of the Department of Defense, in a major win for President Donald Trump and his new administration. Vice President JD Vance cast the 51-50 tie-breaking vote after former GOP Leader Mitch McConnell and GOP Sens. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska and Susan Collins of Maine joined Democrats to oppose Hegseth’s nomination. It was just the second time in history that a vice president has broken a tie for a Cabinet nominee – the other being then-Vice President Mike Pence for Betsy DeVos’ 2017 confirmation to lead the Education Department. Hegseth will be sworn in as the secretary of defense Saturday morning by the vice president at the White House, according to a person familiar with the matter. Hegset...
The White House released 1,800 one-ton bomb shipments previously frozen by former US president Joe Biden, an Israeli official told The Jerusalem Post on Saturday. The delivery was frozen back in May of last year due to the Israeli operation in Rafah. Later on Saturday, US President Donald Trump wrote that "a lot of things" were on their way to Israel in a post on the social media platform Truth Social. "A lot of things that were ordered and paid for by Israel but have not been sent by Biden are now on their way!" the post said. In May, Biden warned Israel that he'd halt US weapons shipments earmarked for Gaza if the IDF embarked on a major military operation against Hamas in Rafah. Freezing arms transfer to Israel "I've made it clear that if they [Israel] go int...
Liri Albag, Daniella Gilboa, Naama Levy, and Karina Ariev were held together in Hamas captivity, alongside Agam Berger, who remains in captivity. According to Kan News, all four of the lookouts who returned home on Saturday were held together with Agam Berger, who is expected to be released next Saturday. In recent days, the four were separated from Agam - in a parting that was very difficult for all five of them. The four returned hostages also recounted that in the early days of their captivity, an elderly hostage looked out for them, ensuring they had food and were able to shower. They were able to say that he was killed in captivity. Over the course of their captivity, the young women were held both in civilian apartments and in Hamas tunnels, in less-than-hygienic conditions. H...
