US Senate Majority Leader-Elect John Thune stated that the Senate and the US would adopt a more pro-Israel policy when President-Elect Donald Trump and the Republican Senate Majority come into office in January. "It's been over 13 months now since Hamas terrorists waged war against Israel, and for the past year-plus, Democrats have struggled to support our ally Israel, and it has literally fractured the Democratic Party," Thune said. "For example, we are expecting, tomorrow, Senator [Bernie] Sanders to offer a resolution denying lethal aid to Israel." "The refusal to have our ally's back and the hesitation to call out antisemitism in our own country has consequences. It enables bad behavior and bad actors around the world, and it encourages others to abandon Israel in their tim...

FEMA Director Deanne Criswell on Tuesday blasted an agency supervisor who directed emergency workers to avoid making contact with Florida homes with Donald Trump signs, and said she will ask her inspector general to see how deep the problem goes. Testifying to Congress, Ms. Criswell confirmed reports that the employee did order her team to snub pro-Trump homes as they made visits to offer assistance after hurricanes blasted across Florida this fall. “This employee wrote to about 11 staffers under her supervision that they should ’avoid homes advertising Trump,’” the director said. She said she moved quickly to fire the employee, whom she didn’t name. The woman, Marn’i Washington, has come forward and defended he...
New York prosecutors said Tuesday they’ll oppose any effort to dismiss President-elect Donald Trump’s hush money conviction as his sentencing looms, but they expressed some openness to delaying the case until after his impending second term. In a court filing Tuesday, the Manhattan district attorney’s office said Trump’s forthcoming presidency isn’t grounds for dropping a case that was already tried. But “given the need to balance competing constitutional interests,” prosecutors said, “consideration must be given” to potentially freezing the case until after he’s out of office. Trump was convicted in May of falsifying business records to cover up a scheme to influence the 2016 election by paying hush money [...] Trump ...

To Get Up and Keep Going Eden Dawi is the older sister of Ro’i Dawi, who was killed last year together with ten other soldiers when their armored personnel carrier was struck by an anti-tank missile. Ro’i fell during the weeks in which we read about the trials of Avraham Avinu: his self-sacrifice, travels and Akeidat Yitzchak. In this week’s parasha, Chayei Sarah, we read about the first funeral in the Torah when Avraham Avinu buries Sarah Imeinu in Me’arat Hamachpela. The verse says: “…Avraham came to mourn for Sarah and to bewail her.” This is followed by the words: “Then Avraham rose from beside his dead”—in other words, after the funeral, the eulogies, and the weeping, Avraham gets up and returns to his active life: He pur...
Washington, DC - Nov. 19, 2024  - Donald Trump is expected to nominate veteran Wall Street financier Howard Lutnick to lead the Commerce Department, according to people familiar with the matter, elevating one of the financial world’s most vocal supporters of the president-elect to a crucial position overseeing the incoming administration’s economic agenda. Lutnick, chief executive of the financial-services firm Cantor Fitzgerald, in recent months has become a close Trump ally and had been a top contender to lead the Treasury Department. As the co-chair of the president-elect’s transition team, Lutnick has spent much of his time at Mar-a-Lago, Trump’s private Florida club, poring over shortlists of candidates for positions in the admini...

Wes Moore’s administration has hired one of the world’s largest consulting and technology firms to help prepare for the cascading effects President-elect Donald Trump’s new administration could have on the state. It will offer risk assessments with options for how the state could respond, according to a copy of the agreement obtained by The Baltimore Sun. Much is at stake for Maryland under the new administration, from major infrastructure projects to the state’s ...

The US on Tuesday imposed sanctions on six senior Hamas officials, the US Treasury Department said, in further action against the terrorist organization as Washington has sought to achieve a ceasefire and the release of hostages in Gaza. The Treasury Department said in a statement the sanctions targeted the group's representatives abroad, a senior member of the Hamas military wing, and those involved in supporting fundraising efforts for the group and weapons smuggling into Gaza. “Hamas continues to rely on key officials who seemingly maintain legitimate, public-facing roles within the group, yet who facilitate their terrorist activities, represent their interests abroad, and coordinate the transfer of money and goods into Gaza,” Treasury's Acting Under Se...

Donald Trump's sentencing for 34 criminal charges in the state of New York was abruptly adjourned by the court Tuesday without explanation, giving the presiding judge additional time to weigh how to proceed.  The delayed sentencing came on the same day that District Attorney Alvin Bragg was slated to file a recommendation to Judge Juan Merchan on how to proceed. Trump was convicted in May by a Manhattan jury on 34 counts of falsifying business records, stemming from a case about payments made [...], which could have landed him a maximum sentence of up to four years in prison.  But the presidential race — and Trump’s victory — had thrown the timeline for court proceedings into a fog of uncertainty. The presiding judge in the New York case, Ju...

This week's piece is dedicated to the refu'ah of my nephew wounded  in Lebanon - Noam Avraham ben Atara Shlomit. May Hashem grant him and all the other chayalim a complete and speedy recovery. In our previous pieces, we have delved into the profound and transformative power of Torah and mitzvot in our lives. They safeguard our health and foster our personal and spiritual growth, inspiring us to reach a higher spiritual plane. Sustaining True Life Rebbe Akiva saw Torah learning as not just critical but essential. In response to those who questioned his teaching Torah in violation of a Roman decree, Rebbe Akiva compared our need for Torah to a fish’s dependency on water (Berachot 61b). Torah is not just an enhancer of life but a condition for it. Though we can surviv...
