We need your help!  The first step in our community’s current struggle to obtain tuition and other educational relief for our families is scheduled for this Wednesday, September 11, when the House Ways and Means Committee will consider a multi-billion-dollar tax credit proposal entitled the “Educational Choice for Children Act (ECCA)” (H.R. 9462). This bill has gained momentum in Congress and is the fastest and surest way to bring school choice to all 50 states.   We need you to urge your representatives to support the bill.  ECCA offers one critical form of “school choice” – methods that lessen the financial burden on parents and provide broader options for parents to choose schools best suited for their children, whether they b...

Baltimore, MD - Sept. 9, 2024 - The excitement was palpable this past Friday afternoon, as Kehillas Derech Chaim prepared to move into their brand-new building on Pimlico Road. Balloon pillars and a personal cake for each family to take home for Shabbos were neatly waiting at the entrance for the influx of eager men, women and children to come. Rabbi Pinchas Gross, the Rav of the shul, along with the entire kehilla and all the local Rabbanim of Baltimore, danced the sifrei Torah down the block and into the majestic Aron Kodesh inside the shul. Sincere joy and passion radiated from the hearts and faces of every man, woman and child as they escorted the sifrei Torah to their new shared home. After ten years of growth and development into the beautiful kehilla of over 200 families, B'H,...
“Calls for a negotiated ceasefire with Hamas are not only immoral – they’re dangerous.” This is the stark warning delivered by SA Chief Rabbi Warren Goldstein, following recent pressure on Israel from Western countries – including Israel’s closest ally, the US – to finalize a deal with the Gaza-based, Iranian-backed terror group. “By demanding a negotiated ceasefire instead of surrender,” says Goldstein, “the world sends Hamas – and all Jihadi terrorists – a dangerous message: no matter what you do, no matter what evil you perpetrate, you will always be able to extract compromises and concessions. Your violence, intimidation, and terror works.” This, he believes, dramatically increases the risk of a terror att...

Former head of the National Security Council and Jerusalem Institute for Strategy and Security (JISS) fellow Yaakov Amidror spoke on the state of affairs in the fight against Hamas in Gaza and Hezbollah in Lebanon in a recent interview with Radio 103FM.  "The intense phase of the fighting is behind us, and now we must ensure that Hamas does not rebuild itself as a major threat," he said.  "The IDF must maintain operational flexibility and be able to act in accordance with the needs on the ground," Amidror added.  Concerning the October 7 failures, Amidror stated, "There is no direct connection between the failure that day and what the IDF is doing now. Most of the officers and fighters in Gaza today are not responsible for the failure of October 7," he noted, adding ...
CEO of the World Betar Movement, Yigal Brand, called on Monday for Jews in New York and the general US to be protected. In his remarks, Brand joined similar calls made by members of the Betar movement, warning Jews not to visit New York City amid the rise in antisemitism in the city. “The situation is dire, and we call on the authorities in New York to free the hands of the police and allow it to act with decisiveness against the criminals and put them on trial,” Brand said. He added that the World Betar Movement would continue to operate independently to protect New York Jews and the broader American Jewish community. Antisemitic incidents recorded in New York In August, the New York City Police Department reported 19 antisemitic incidents, compared to the ...
American Jews plan to vote for Vice President Kamala Harris by a wide margin, according to a new survey by a Jewish Democratic group. The survey also found that 87% of American Jewish voters support the Biden administration’s efforts to reach a ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas War that would release the Israeli hostages held in Gaza. The survey, released Monday by the Jewish Democratic Council of America, shows 68% of Jewish voters planning to vote for Harris, the Democratic nominee, and 25% planning to vote for Donald Trump, the former president and Republican nominee. The survey indicates that a volatile season of campaigning, including heated exchanges over which party is worse for American Jews, has hardly budged the Jewish electorate. It also suggests that extensi...
Baltimore, MD - Sept. 9, 2024  - Maryland has earned the title of the second-happiest state in the nation. The state’s unemployment rate stands at just 2.9%, among the lowest in the U.S., in addition to a high percentage of households earning over $75,000 per year. The state excels in social and emotional well-being with its residents less likely to express work-related stress on social media. That's because Marylanders are mostly content, ranking third in the country for residents who report liking what they do and feeling motivated to achieve their goals. This sense of purpose and fulfillment is a key contributor to the state’s high happiness ranking. When surveyed about life satisfaction, Maryland residents reported the second-lowest percentage of people experien...
Baltimore, MD - Sept. 9, 2024  - The City of Baltimore has reached an $80 million settlement with Teva Pharmaceuticals, one of the defendants in the city’s ongoing lawsuit against drug manufacturers and distributors accused of contributing to the opioid crisis. The settlement brings the total amount the city has won from opioid companies to more than $322 million, Mayor Brandon M. Scott announced. Baltimore’s lawsuit against the remaining companies is set to go to trial next week. “This settlement marks another major victory for the City of Baltimore and further validates our decision to carry on in the fight to hold these companies accountable,” Scott said in a statement. The city opted out of previous global settlements with Teva and other major opioid com...
Baltimore, MD - Sept. 9, 2024  - Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS), the largest school system in the state of Maryland, is now taking a hard look at weapons detectors in schools. Former Montgomery County Police Department (MCPD) Police Chief Marcus Jones, who is now in charge of security and compliance for the school system, said they are in the early stages of looking at different available products. A 15-year-old was charged last year for bringing a handgun into Richard Montgomery High School. School leaders said weapons detectors could be added in the near future. In the past week, two students and two teachers were killed in a school shooting at a high school in Georgia, and a student was gunned down at Joppatown High School in Baltimore by a classmate. Baltimore, MD - Sept. 9, 2024  - About three months after Big Lots noted "substantial doubt about the Company's ability to continue" in a U.S. Securities & Exchange Commission (SEC) filing, the company said on Monday it has secured $707.5 million to support its operations and sell its business to private equity firm Nexus Capital. This comes as the company has initiated bankruptcy proceedings under Chapter 11. Big Lots listed its assets and liabilities in the range of $1 billion to $10 billion, according to a filing with bankruptcy court in Delaware, which showed creditors in the range of 5,001-10,000. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated at the start of the cabinet meeting on Sunday night that there is and will be no change in the status quo regarding the Temple Mount. His office said in a statement that "the Prime Minister repeated his directive that the ministers of the government not go up to the Temple Mount without his prior approval through his military secretary." Last month, National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir visited the Temple Mount together with Minister Yitzhak Wasserlauf, on the occasion of the fast of Tisha B’Av. On Sunday morning, MK Yitzhak Kroizer, also a member of Otzma Yehudit, ascended the Temple Mount. "We pray for the success of our soldiers in the north, in Judea and Samaria and in the Gaza Strip in the face of our enemy in all place...
A woman and her husband were assaulted in Germany for wearing a t-shirt supporting the Israeli hostages held by the Hamas terrorist organization, the Jewish News Syndicate reported. The attack occurred last Monday in the city of Heidelberg. The victim was wearing a shirt that stated 'Bring them home now,' a phrase popularized in connection with the 250 people who were abducted by Hamas and other terrorists from southern Israel on October 7 and the calls for their release from captivity. The attacker grabbed the woman's shirt and demanded she remove it, lightly injuring her. He then repeatedly struck the woman's husband when he tried to help his wife, knocking out one of his teeth. The attacker later posted about the attack he committed on social media. The ...
Consolation  Would you like to see prophecies of consolation coming true before your very eyes? We’ve been reading the haftarot of nechama—consolation–which describe Jerusalem awakening from her slumber and coming back to life; Jews who are distant, both physically and spiritually, coming home again; and the Jewish nation returning to Hashem and to our proper place in the world.   And then I received a moving video with the following note: “Shalom, it’s Rabbi Reuven Taragin from Yeshivat HaKotel. Fifty new students arrived this week! These young men from the UK, the US, and Canada have graduated from high school and instead of going straight to college have chosen to spend a year learning Torah in Jerusalem, even during a time of war.   &ldq...
