Baltimore, MD - Aug. 16, 2024 - Baltimore’s top cop is pulling out all of the stops trying to hire new officers and to hold on to the ones he’s got. “We have $10,000 signing bonus, $5,000 incentive for education. We have a tax break for those who live in the city. We’re starting a more robust take-home vehicle program,” said Baltimore Police Commissioner Richard Worley. But, at a quarterly progress hearing on the consent decree at the U.S. District Courthouse in downtown Baltimore, a lack of officers was cited as the main thing holding up progress. A department operating with two thousand employees needs six hundred more in spite of its success at reducing homicides and non-fatal shootings in the city. “I don’t worry about it, because the staff...
Over the last 48 hours, senior officials from our three governments have engaged in Doha in intensive talks as mediators aiming to finalize the agreement for a ceasefire and release of hostages and detainees. The talks were earnest and constructive and were held in a positive atmosphere. Earlier today, the US, supported by Egypt and Qatar, presented to both parties a bridging proposal that is consistent with the principles laid out by President Biden in May 31, 2024 and Security Council Resolution No. 2735. This proposal builds on areas where agreement had been reached over the past week, order to bridge any gaps that remained and enable a swift implementation of the deal. Over the next few days working teams will continue to focus on the technical details of implementation of the agreem...

Although it is not a federal holiday, August 15th is officially coined as the annual National Relaxation Day; a day that encourages the people of the world to slow down and unwind. To quote the National Day Calendar website, “It is a day to focus on taking care of ourselves and take a moment to relax. National Relaxation Day is an important day as we all need a break from the fast-paced and often hectic lifestyles we live. Taking time to recuperate and rejuvenate our tired minds and bodies may help prevent many health risks, too.”In terms of the history of National Relaxation Day, ironically enough, it was a fourth-grader by the name of Sean Moeller, who founded this day in 1985. In the spirit of National Relaxation Day, which was celebrated this week, it is interesting to poin...
Qatari Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani urged Iran to hold off on an attack on Israel to avoid harming the ongoing Doha hostage talks in a phone call with Iran's leadership, The Washington Post reported on Friday citing two diplomats familiar with a phone call had between the two leaders. Iran vowed to attack Israel following the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran last month. Despite anticipation in Israel and around the world, the attack has yet to come. Al Thani warned Iran that an attack may further risk the current Gaza ceasefire discussions, which Hamas has refused to participate. Why would Iran wait to attack? Al Thani “encouraged Iran to de-escalate and stressed the need for calm” during the call, one of the diplomat...

France and the United Kingdom must help Israel hit Iranian targets should the Islamic Republic make good on its threat to directly attack the Jewish state, Foreign Minister Israel Katz told his French and British counterparts on Friday. "If Iran attacks, Israel expects the international coalition led by the US, Britain, and France to join Israel not only in defense but also in attacking significant targets in Iran,” Katz said. He spoke after meeting with the foreign ministers of Great Britain David Lammy and of France Stéphane Séjourné in his office in Jerusalem. The two politicians made a lightning visit to Israel on Friday as the IDF remained braced, as it has for over two weeks, for reprisal attacks from Iran and its proxy group Hez...
Each and every Shabbos is a special, meaningful, and holy experience.  But some Shabbasos seem to distinguish themselves from the rest. Shabbos Bereishis fills us with excitement and hope for a bright future. Shabbos HaGadol (the Shabbos before Pesach) reminds us that redemption is in the air.  And it is with this excitement that we approach this coming Shabbos, Shabbos Nachamu, the Shabbos of consolation.  The name of this Shabbos comes from the opening words of the Haftorah where theNavi Yeshayahu says, “Nachamu Nachamu Ami, Be consoled, be consoled my people (Isaiah 40:1).”  We began to feel this consolation after the fast of Tisha B’Av. When the fast ends, we feel euphoric, excit...
שמע ישראל — Hear O Israel! We recite these words three times a day. Even our unfortunate brethren and sisters who are yet unaware of this obligation to recite it daily, nevertheless, have these words upon their lips in moments of desperation. These two words though are merely Moshe's introductory summons to the people — Hear O Israel, to realize that ד' אלקינו ד' אחד — Hashem is our G-d, Hashem is the Only One. Our expressing this phrase then would seem to be out of place. Who are 'we' calling to? On days that we recite Tachanun, we add a prayer to G-d to watch over us. שומר ישראל, שמור שארית ישראל, ואל יאבד ישראל, האומרים שמע ישראל — O Guardian of Israel, safeguard t...

American Airlines has not reinstated its flights to and from Israel since the start of the war against Hamas in Gaza - and is not expected to do so until at least April 2025, Israel Hayom reported Thursday morning.
