United Parcel Service plans to lay off 540 people when it closes a Baltimore County distribution center next month, according to a state database. UPS filed a Work Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) notice with the Maryland Department of Labor on June 20 notifying the state that it plans to lay off hundreds of employees at its sorting facility at 3901 Vero Rd. in Halethorpe. The facility is located in southwestern Baltimore County, near Interstates 95 and 695. The effective date of the layoffs is Aug. 23, according to the notice. UPS did not immediately respond to Patch's request for comment. UPS previously laid off 118 employees at the same facility in March. A spokesperson previously told Patch the company was "reducing the package sorting operatio...
Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s (D) office said Tuesday it won’t oppose delaying former President Trump’s July 11 sentencing even as they disagree with his new attempt to set aside his hush money verdict on immunity grounds.  Following the Supreme Court’s decision carving out criminal immunity for former presidents, Trump on Monday sent a letter to his judge insisting prosecutors at the trial introduced evidence that is precluded under the Supreme Court’s test.  “Although we believe defendant’s arguments to be without merit, we do not oppose his request for leave to file and his putative request to adjourn sentencing pending determination of his motion,” Assistant District Attorney Josh...

Gaza's electricity company began connecting cables on Salah al-Din Street in the Deir al-Balah area, for the first time since the outbreak of the war. After the infrastructure works are completed, the water desalination and sewage treatment facility will be operated directly from the Israeli electricity grid. The order to connect was given by Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, who explained that it was a move to provide "a response to basic humanitarian needs." The Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories (COGAT) noted that the operation of the water desalination facility is being carried out with the approval of the political echelon and derives from humanitarian considerations to prevent pollution and the outbreak of diseases in the Strip. An official IDF statement on ...
Rudy Giuliani, who once served as New York City’s mayor and the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, has been disbarred “effective immediately” for his efforts to subvert the 2020 presidential election, a state appeals court ruled Tuesday.  A panel of judges in New York’s Appellate Division, First Department wrote that Giuliani “flagrantly misused” his position as an attorney for former President Trump and his campaign to make “intentionally” false statements to courts, lawmakers and the public.   “In so doing, respondent not only deliberately violated some of the most fundamental tenets of the legal profession, but he also actively contributed to the national strife that has followed the 2020 ...
Baltimore County, MD - July 2, 2024 - Last night, the Baltimore County Council made history! The council voted 5-1 to ask voters to expand our legislative body from seven to nine members with a ballot measure during the November General Election.Since adopting a charter-style government in 1956, Baltimore County has more than doubled in population, with each of the seven council members now representing about 123,000 residents. As a result, our county has grown and changed profoundly. It’s time to expand the council to provide a more reflective and equitable government to best serve all our residents. As the lead sponsor of this legislation, I’m proud to have championed this effort from the beginning to provide our residents this opportunity.

There is probably no field of science, where non-truths are turned into absolute facts and where false paradigms are built, more than in the world of nutrition.  I have seen “health coaches” on social media outlets talking about the great health advantages of consuming large amounts of animal protein (meat, chicken, fish, dairy and eggs) when overwhelming evidence indicates the opposite is true.  I have had clients who were put on ketogenic diets by their doctors all in the name of weight loss who are now battling chronic disease.  I received a message from a health coach last month pointing out how vegans have more bone fractures. There are contradicting studies in that department but even if true, compare that to the fact that healthy vegans outlive those who e...
Baltimore, MD – July 2, 2024  -   There have been several thefts of vehicles throughout the Baltimore County Police Pikesville Precinct area in the last seven days. Several of these thefts involved vehicles that were left running and several others were left unlocked. Even though you may be running into the store briefly or, even quickly back into your home, remember to always turn off your vehicle and lock it up. These thefts recently occurred on Winton Court, Stone Creek Place, Liberty Road, Slade Avenue, Plymouth Road, and Pheasant Cross Drive. Additionally, if you own a vehicle manufactured by Hyundai or Kia, we encourage you to contact an area dealership in order to determine if your vehicle is eligible for the anti-theft software update.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu responded to an article published by the New York Times Tuesday stating that a rift is emerging between Netanyahu and Israeli generals who want a ceasefire in Gaza. According to the report, the General Staff Forum sees a ceasefire as the best way to free the 120 hostages still in Gaza and to give the IDF time to "recuperate" before the potential beginning of another war with Hezbollah in Lebanon, even if this would mean leaving Hamas in power in Gaza. Netanyahu said in response to the report: "Anonymous sources are talking to the New York Times today. They are telling it that Israel will be ready to end the war before all of its goals are achieved. I don't know who those anonymous sources are, but I am here to make it unequivocally clear: this ...

About 17 years ago, we prepared to bid farewell to our eldest son, Avi, as he departed for his post-high school year in Israel. Little did we know that this gap year would turn into a life in the Holy Land. I have to confess that I was warned: “You spent three years in Israel after high school,” he cleverly argued, “so I get at least three years!” Negotiations were unnecessary. My wife and I were happy to let him stay as long as he liked, and we’re even more elated that he and his family have made their lives here.  These were the days before phones had decent cameras, so as the date of his departure drew closer, I asked a photographer friend to come to the house and take a family photo shoot.  With a wry smile on his face, Avi said:...
US President Joe Biden on Monday ripped the Supreme Court’s decision on presidential immunity, which ruled that presidents have an absolute immunity from prosecution for core official acts, calling it "a dark day in America.". In a speech from the White House, Biden issued a stern warning over a possible second term for former President Donald Trump. “There are no kings in America. Each, each of us is equal before the law. No one, no one is above the law, not even the president of the United States,” he said. “(With) today’s Supreme Court decision on presidential immunity, that fundamentally changed. For all practical purposes, there are virtually no limits on what the president can do. It’s a fundamentally new principle and it’s a d...
President Biden’s campaign is intensely trying to quell speculation that he may drop out of the 2024 race following his lackluster debate performance last week.  Most top Democrats have voiced support for Biden continuing in the race, while members of his family, including first lady Jill Biden, have declared they also want him to remain a candidate, casting doubt on the potential for replacing Biden.  But if Biden were to step aside, several prominent Democrats could be waiting in the wings as possible successors. Here are the top possible Biden replacements:  Kamala Harris  If Biden were to decide against seeking reelection, Vice President Harris would be the most obvious choice to replace him. Harris h...
