The White House is seeking roughly $4 billion in additional emergency funding from Congress for costs related to the collapse and repair of the Francis Scott Key bridge in Baltimore and to respond to other disasters that have occurred around the U.S. in recent months. That money is part of a new emergency request from President Joe Biden’s administration that essentially re-ups a broader, $56 billion ask from last October that Congress virtually ignored. Now, the Democratic administration is asking for that same pot of money again, but with billions added to deal with the bridge reconstruction and related costs. More specifically, the Biden administration wants an additional $3.1 billion for the Department of Transportation, which would go toward rebuilding Key Bridge wit...
Baltimore, MD - June 29, 2024 -  A federal judge has denied former Baltimore City State's Attorney Marilyn Mosby's request to travel out-of state for a paid speaking engagement while on home detention. Last month judge Lydia Kay Griggsby sentenced Mosby to three years of supervised probation, with one year of home monitoring, except for when working. A jury convicted Mosby of two counts of perjury, and one count of making false statements on a home mortgage application. Her public defender on Thursday asked Griggsby to approve July trip to New Orleans for the Essence Festival of Culture, which they describe as "one of the largest and most influential African-Americanfestivals in the country." Mosby's defense team claims the trip would help supply her a steady income...
President Joe Biden is expected to discuss the future of his re-election campaign with family at Camp David on Sunday, following a nationally televised debate Thursday that left many fellow Democrats worried about his ability to beat former President Donald Trump in November, according to five people familiar with the matter. Biden’s trip was planned before Thursday’s debate. He and first lady Jill Biden are scheduled to join their children and grandchildren there late Saturday. So far, the party’s top leaders have offered public support for Biden, including in tweets posted by former presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton. Senior congressional Democrats, including Reps. Hakeem Jeffries of New York, Jim Clyburn of South Carolina...
Fmr. IDF Personnel Directorate Chief Major General (Res.) Moti Almoz commented in an interview with the Israeli Meet the Press on the ongoing war in Gaza. "This is a war against terror and therefore one must understand that we will be in Gaza for at least the next decade. We will hear that there are brigade-level operations underway in various cities from time to time. There is no other way - this is not a job for one year, nor two or three." He sees no signs of de-escalation in the north in the near future either. "In this region, agreements don't last long. Against terrorism, we have not found the solution that is not force." "In Lebanon, we tried everything else - now what will guarantee the security of northern Israel?" Almoz also criticized: "I think the Disengageme...
One of two drivers responsible for the death of six construction workers on I-695 in March 2023, is being freed from prison after serving just three months of an 18-month sentence. A Baltimore County Circuit judge approved Melachi Brown's release on Friday, over the state's objection. He will now serve out the rest of his sentence on home detention. Brown's attorneys argued for early release saying their client has no prior criminal record, poses no threat to public safety, and fears for his life behind bars.
Mr. Brown suffers from anxiety and depression, and those conditions are particularly exacerbated by the disruptive and hostile environment in the Detention Center. Mr. Brown is enduring harassment, threats of violence, and intimidation inside the Detent...
Clearly, the most significant part of this week's parsha is the episode of the spies who were sent to Eretz Yisrael. As a result of their negative report, B'nei Yisrael were forced to postpone their entry into Eretz Yisrael for almost thirty-nine years. Although the report of the ten spies was, on the whole, a negative one, the pesukim seem to show an apparent progression of the gravity of the spies' arguments. We know what they said and we know how they were gruesomely punished but it is important to understand what it was that they said which warranted such retribution. When the spies die a horrible death for their sins, the pasuk (14:37) reads, "vayamusu ha'anashim motzi'ei dibas ha'aretz ra'ah..." The men who had slander...

The Biden administration is expected to soon release 500-pound bombs that were part of a weapons shipment to Israel put on hold in April over US concerns about the IDF’s military operation in Rafah, one US and one Israeli official told Barak Ravid of Axios on Thursday. About 1,700 500-lb. bombs are expected to be delivered after Israel's operation in Rafah ends, which is expected to happen in two weeks, an Israeli official told Ravid. At the same time, US and Israeli officials say the Biden administration is still reviewing another part of the shipment that includes 1,800 2,000-pound bombs. In early May, Axios reported that President Joe Biden decided to put on hold a weapons shipment that was supposed to be sent to Israel. The White House later conf...

The Supreme Court on Friday limited the Justice Department’s ability to use an Enron-era obstruction of justice statute to prosecute some people who stormed the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. The court said a Pennsylvania man who entered the Capitol building during the riot may have been improperly charged under a statute enacted in 2002 that makes it a crime to impede certain government proceedings. The decision is expected to ripple through lower courts and could upend hundreds of other Jan. 6 cases. That may include the election-interference case brought against former President Donald Trump by special counsel Jack Smith. Congress enacted the 2002 law in response to the Enron accounting scandal and allegations that the energy company’s ...
