Baltimore, MD - Jan. 9, 2025 - A later-than-normal winter surge in COVID-19 cases is catching some Maryland residents by surprise as infections nationwide reached the highest levels in three years just as Americans were gathering with their families for the holidays.
Health experts call the current uptick in cases a โsilentโ surge because it comes after a long lull in COVID-19 transmission. This one came โout of nowhere,โ Michael Hoerger, an associate professor at Tulane University School of Medicine and public health expert on tracking COVID-19 trends, wrote on X.
Hoerger, who runs a COVID-19 forecasting model that pulls heavily from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention wastewater surveillance data, estimates that 1 in 49 people, o...

Marylandโs 90-day legislative session starts on Wednesday, January 8, and one of the biggest agenda items this year will be the Blueprint for Marylandโs Future.
The state is facing a multi-billion-dollar deficit, much of which is driven by education spending that a growing number of state leaders say needs to be slowed down.
The Blueprint for Marylandโs Future, passed in 2021, allocates $30 billion in additional tax dollars to public education statewide over the first 10 years and $4 billion more annually thereafter. The funding comes from a mix of state and local dollars and is aimed at increasing teacher salaries, expanding Pre-K, and bolstering career and technology training. However, when the legislature passed the law, it did not include a funding mechanism.

Baltimore, MD - Jan. 8, 2025 - Don't put away those snow shovels just yet. Mother Nature may have another round of snow heading toward Maryland this weekend. That will be accompanied by more bitter cold, with lows plunging into the teens three of the next five nights.
A winter storm threat may materialize late Friday night into early Saturday, the National Weather Service said.
A developing ice storm will target southern states by the end of the week before turning toward the mid-Atlantic and possibly New England this weekend, AccuWeather said. There's a potential for 1 to 3 inches of snow.
AccuWeather said the storm could quickly head east into the ocean, leaving Central Maryland with less snow and the lower Eastern Shore with more.
AccuWeather noted...

California firefighters battled wind-whipped wildfires that tore across the Los Angeles area, destroying homes, clogging roadways as tens of thousands fled and straining resources as US officials prepared for the situation to worsen early Wednesday.
The fires appeared to destroy scores of homes, business and other structures in three separate areas of southern California, with at least one synagogue completely destroyed by fire and other Jewish institutions under threat.
All three fires were at 0 percent containment as of early Wednesday.
In Pasadena, a blaze dubbed the Eaton Fire consumed over 1,000 acres as flames raced down Eaton Canyon toward homes and assisted living facilities, forcing thousands to race for safety, with winds expected to continue whipping up into the early morning...

Baltimore, MD - Jan. 7, 2025 - Though Gov. Wes Moore has signaled an interest in allowing liquor to be sold in Maryland grocery stores, state Senate President Bill Ferguson said Monday that it isnโt at the top of his list of legislative priorities.
โThis is not something that weโre going to be spending a lot of brain power trying to figure out,โ Ferguson said in an interview Monday with The Baltimore Sun.
In December, Moore, a Democrat, said he would support legislation that would allow Maryland grocery stores to sell beer and wine.
โI look forward to working with our legislative partners to advance this overdue change in policy to advance consumer choice and economic competitiveness that enjoys the support of the vast majority of Marylanders across politic...
