Baltimore, MD - May 31, 2024  - The Baltimore Kehila, is fortunate to have many wonderful assets, including our Mosdos Chinuch.  Our schools’ devoted faculties, engaged parent bodies, and dedicated lay leadership are unified in the schools’ sole mission of nurturing and educating our precious children. From the times of Chazal, each Jewish community was charged with establishing appropriate schools for the community’s children.  Of course, the cost of providing appropriate chinuch (which, in the United States means a dual program of Limudei Kodesh and Limudei Chol) is quite significant.  Besides the salaries of our neighbors and friends who dedicate themselves to teaching our children and look to our schools for their livelihood, the costs to maintain...

In a confrontation that erupted this morning (Monday) during a sensitive discussion at one of the General Staff meetings, several generals in the General Staff criticized Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi. "At Training Base 1 they teach to take command responsibility. What is happening with that? Where is what we learned and what is actually happening?", the generals criticized the Chief of Staff. They continued to criticize the lack of consultations, and Halevi responded: "There is no time, we're at war." In response, they added: "So why is there time for events like Jerusalem Day? We are stagnating and not achieving victory." In response to these remarks, Chief of Staff Halevi replied: "I took responsibility in the early days of the war, and I said in front of the public at the Western...

Today (Monday), IDF representatives informed the families of Haim Perry, Yoram Metzger, Amiram Cooper, and Nadav Popplewell, who were brutally abducted to the Gaza Strip on October 7th, that they are no longer alive and that their bodies are held by the Hamas terrorist organization. The decision to pronounce the four hostages dead was based on intelligence and was confirmed by a Ministry of Health expert committee, in coordination with the Ministry of Religious Services and the Chief Rabbi of Israel. The circumstances of their death in Hamas captivity are still under examination by all the relevant professionals. The IDF uses a wide variety of methods to gather information about the hostages who remain in the Gaza Strip. Amiram Cooper, 84, was one of the founders of Kibbutz Nirim. Amir...
Fresh Start Produce Sales Inc. of Delray, Florida, is recalling whole cucumbers shipped to certain states from May 17th through May 21st, 2024, due to the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella, an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis. The recalled cucumbers were shipped in bulk cartons from May 17th through May 21st, 2024...
Baltimore, MD - June 3, 2024  - On Saturday, salvage crews completed the lift of a 470-short-ton (940,000 pounds) steel section of Francis Scot Key Bridge truss from the federal navigation channel, according to a recent post from U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Baltimore District. Buried deep in the river mudline, the section was part of the massive steel truss that pinned the The Dali for seven weeks. The current specs of the Unified Command's "limited access channel" (50-foot depth x 400-foot width) allows all shipping traffic to enter/exit the Port of Baltimore. These final lifts are an important next step to re-opening the full 700-foot width of the navigation channel.
Former President Trump on Sunday called on the Supreme Court to act ahead of his July sentencing after he was found guilty on 34 felony counts in his New York City hush money trial last week. Trump, in a post on Truth Social, complained that his sentencing in the New York case is scheduled for days before the start of Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, where the GOP is set to formally nominate him for president. The former president also used the post to attack Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg (D), who brought the charges against him, and Judge Juan Merchan, who oversaw the trial, and argued it was unfair those two “will make a decision which will determine the future of our Nation.” “The United States Supreme Court MUST DECIDE!” Trump ...

Rebirth of Hope in the Jezreel Valley Ophir Basor, a dedicated farmer from Kibbutz Ein Harod, has begun the annual wheat harvest. This year, we have come to appreciate the profound value of agriculture in our land. With Shavuot, the harvest festival, fast approaching, the agricultural activity on this kibbutz pulses with the same rhythm that has persisted since biblical times. We can easily imagine Ophir’s ancestors harvesting wheat in this very place, in the Jezreel Valley, just before Shavuot thousands of years ago. Ein Harod stands as a symbol of classic secularism, having been the heart of the kibbutz movement, which initially minimized the importance of religious practice. Yet today, as Ophir began harvesting the kibbutz wheat, he declared, “L’shem matzat mitzvah.&...
Baltimore, MD - June 3, 2024  -  Gas prices in Baltimore have dropped 7 cents per gallon in the past week, according to GasBuddy's new survey. Prices in Baltimore are 6.5 cents per gallon lower than a month ago and stand 17.6 cents per gallon higher than a year ago. The national average price of diesel has fallen 1.8 cents in the last week and stands at $3.82 per gallon.
"The calendar has closed on May, and so too has the door closed on rising gas prices, with the national average declining to its lowest level since March. Thankfully, gas prices are unlikely to be moved by OPEC's meeting and agreement to extend production cuts into 2025, leading the national average to fall below $3.50 in the next week," said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at...

Minister of Defense Yoav Gallant spoke overnight (Sunday) with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken. The two discussed the various efforts to bring the hostages back and to dismantle Hamas. Gallant emphasized to Secretary Blinken that "Israel would not stop the war in Gaza until it brings back all of the hostages and collapses Hamas' rule," and added: "In any case, after the war, Hamas will not rule Gaza." He updated Blinken that the defense establishment is advancing moves that would establish an alternative to Hamas rule in the Gaza Strip and said that it is an imperative process for the collapse of Hamas and to create pressure that will aid in the release of the hostages. Earlier in the day, Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry claimed that Hamas responded positively to the c...
