U.S. job growth picked up in August but missed economists' expectations, while the unemployment rate was little changed. The Labor Department on Friday reported that employers added 142,000 jobs in August, compared to the 160,000 gain that was projected by LSEG economists.  The unemployment rate also dipped slightly to 4.2%, in line with expectations, after it had unexpectedly risen to 4.3% in July – which was the highest level for the jobless rate since October 2021. The number of jobs added in the prior two months were both revised downward, with job creation in June revised down by 61,000 from a gain of 179,000 to 118,000 – while July was revised down by 25,000 from 114,000 to 89,000. If a corpse will be found באדמה — on the land that G-d your Lord, gives you to possess it, נופל בשדה — fallen in the field, ולא נודע — it was not known who smote him. (דברים כא א) The Torah goes on to detail the laws of the עגלה ערופה — the axed heifer that is brought by the city that is determined by the elders and judges to be in closest proximity to the corpse. The crux of this ritual is to display the responsibility of the community for a stranger's death. By taking the heifer — too young to propagate, to a harsh valley — too hard to work and produce fruit, and axing the bac...

Napoleon Bonaparte (1768-1821) was the emperor of France from 1804-1814 and is regarded as one of history’s greatest military leaders. A unique aspect about Napoleon was that he was known to be relatively short in terms of physical stature. The story is told of Napoleon who was one time trying to grab something that was high up, however, it was beyond his reach. One of his servants standing nearby, said, “Don’t worry, I’m bigger than you, let me grab it for the king!”Napoleon responded to his servant, “You are taller than me, however, I am still bigger!”Physical stature is one thing. But it is certainly not the full picture. Qualitative largeness is much bigger than quantitative largeness! The Sefer Shemen Rosh, written by Rav Asher Anshil Katz, us...
