NEW YORK (Reuters) - A gas explosion in a private dwelling in the New York City borough of the Bronx injured multiple people on Tuesday, the city's fire department said.
The extent and number of the injuries was not immediately known, a department spokesman said.
Firefighters responded to the dwelling after someone called at about 6:20 a.m. EDT to report a possible gas leak, the spokesman said.
A spokesman for the New York City Police Department said its officers also responded to reports of an explosion at about 7:00 a.m. EDT.

BERLIN (AP) -- Two homemade explosive devices were set off outside a mosque and a conference center in the eastern German city of Dresden, police said Tuesday. Nobody was hurt.
Dresden police said in a statement that there was no immediate report on the extent of damage from the explosions late Monday.
"Even though we do not have a letter of confession, we must assume there's a xenophobic background," Police President Horst Kretschmar said.
German Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere called the attacks "outrageous" and condemned them sharply.
"Aggression against people who are practicing Islam is increasing in Germany," he said. "Fortunately, people didn't get hurt, but we don't want these things to happen in Germany."

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Washington Monument is closing indefinitely because of ongoing problems with its elevator, the latest in a series of woes for one of the city's most enduring tourist attractions.
The National Park Service announced Monday that the monument, which draws 600,000 visitors a year, will remain closed until its elevator control system can be modernized, a process expected to take up to nine months once work begins.
A start date for the $3 million project has not been determined.
The lone elevator carrying visitors to the top of the 555-foot obelisk has broken down frequently over the past two years, roughly since the monument reopened after being damaged in an earthquake.

The office of Israel’s State Prosecutor announced Monday that former leading officials in the Yisrael Beitenu party will be charged with corruption, according to Haaretz. 16 individuals are set to be indicted, including former Yisrael Beitenu MKs Stas Misezhnikov and ex-Deputy Minister Faina Kirschenbaum.
Misezhnikov, a former Tourism Minister, is facing charges of fraud, bribery, breach of trust, and using cocaine on the job, which he allegedly sent one of his advisers to purchase for him. Former Deputy Interior Minister Kirschenbaum is being charged with fraud, bribery, breach of trust, tax evasion, and money laundering. Kirschenbaum formerly served as Yisrael Beitenu’s General Secretary.

A routine check-up for their three-week old baby turned into every parent’s worst nightmare for a British couple living in Cyprus this weekend.

(AFP). German data protection authorities on Tuesday said they had blocked Facebook from collecting subscriber data from its subsidiary WhatsApp, citing privacy concerns.
Facebook and WhatsApp promised in the wake of the Silicon Valley giant’s 2014 acquisition of the messaging app that they would not share data, Hamburg’s Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information Johannes Caspar said in a statement.
He added that Facebook would be required to delete any data already received from WhatsApp in Germany.
“It has to be (the users’) decision whether they want to connect their account with Facebook,” Caspar said. “Facebook has to ask for their permission in advance.”

Reporter Amir Bar Shalom of Israel’s Channel 1 television encountered Jonathan Pollard and his wife on the streets of New York and conducted an impromptu interview that aired on Erev Shabbos.
Pollard said it would “take a miracle” for him to be able to live in Israel

New data show that murders in the United States rose 10.8 percent in the last year, following a two-decade decline. The FBI said the rise was the biggest single-year increase since 1971. The number of murders for 2015—15,696—was about the same total as in 2009. The total is still half what it was in 1991. “You lost 50 lb. You gained back a couple. You’re not fat,” said Jeffrey Butts, the director of the Research & Evaluation Center at John Jay College of Criminal Justice. “That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t look at your behavior, because the trend is not good.”

Yerushalayim mayor Nir Barkat met rabbonim and politicians of the chareidi Degel Hatorah party who felt that he was antagonistic to their needs and promised to upgrade chareidi schools as part of a general plan to enhance the city’s schools. Barkat also agreed to transfer a large section of the religious Zionist Harel School in Ramot to a local Bais Yaakov school and announced that three new kindergartens will be built for chareidim in the mixed Kiryat Yovel neighborhood as well as other improvements in mixed neighborhoods.

New York - Brooklyn District Attorney Ken Thompson today announced that a 29-year-old Brooklyn man has been convicted for his participation in the kidnapping and murder of Menachem Stark, 39, on January 2, 2014.
District Attorney Thompson said, “This defendant waited for Menachem Stark outside of his office and forcibly kidnapped him, killing him in the process. As a result, his wife and seven children were robbed of their husband and father. The jury has now held him accountable for his actions.”
The District Attorney identified the defendant as Kendel Felix, 29, of Crown Heights, Brooklyn. He was convicted of first-degree kidnapping and second-degree murder following a jury trial before Brooklyn Supreme Court Justice Alexander Jeong. He faces up to 25 years to life...

The gunman who shot and wounded nine people this morning in Houston was wearing Nazi paraphernalia, two law-enforcement sources told KPRC2. Officers responded to the scene just around 6 a.m., where the shooter opened fire on police, “wearing what appeared to be an antique German uniform with Swastikas on it.”
The gunman was found dead shortly after the police returned fire and several weapons have been found inside his vehicle, according to local police. Investigators who inspected the shooter’s apartment reportedly found additional Nazi paraphernalia inside. BROOKLYN - Kendel Felix has been found guilty of kidnapping and second-degree murder in the kidnapping and murder of Menachem Stark, Hy”d, on Jan. 2-3, 2014. He was not found guilty of attempted robbery.
Felix will be sentenced by Judge Alexander Jeong October 19. He faces a maximum of 25 years to life in prison for each count.
