When the Torah tells us about the Yom Tov of Pesach, it states

You shall eat matza for six days, and the seventh day shall be an ‘atzeres’ for Hashem your G-d”.

Regarding the Yom Tov of Shemini Atzeres, the Torah states

“On the eight day there will be an ‘azteres’ for you, you shall not do any laborious work”.

Chazal make note of the seeming discrepancy between the pessukim, that one of the Yomim Tovim is called “an atzeres for Hashem” and the other is called “an atzeres for you”.  The Gemara (Pesachim 68b) tells us that Reb Eliezer and Reb Yehoshua dispute how to reconcile the pessukim.[1]  Reb Eliezer explains that a person has a choice.  He can either dedicate Yom Tov completely towards his own personal pleasure and thereby make it an atzeres for himself, or he can dedicate Yom Tov completely to Torah learning and thereby make it an atzeres for Hashem – או כולו לכם או כולו לה'.  Reb Yehoshua disagrees, and explains that every Yom Tov should be partially used for Torah learning and partially used for his own pleasure, thereby creating an atzeres which is both for Hashem and for himself – חציו לה' וחציו לכם.[2]

The meforshim explain that learning Torah is a simcha for a person’s neshama whereas eating and drinking is a simcha for a person’s guf (body).    According to Reb Eliezer, a person has to choose whether Yom Tov will be a day of simcha for his guf or his neshama, whereas according to Reb Yehoshua he must provide simcha to both.[3]  The halacha follows the view of Reb Yehoshua, and a person should therefore divide Yom Tov between eating festive meals and learning Torah.[4]

The Gemara continues to say that "הכל מודים בעצרת דבעינן נמי לכם, מאי טעמא, יום שניתנה בו תורה הוא".  “All agree that on Shevuos one needs [an atzeres] ‘for you’.  Why?  Because it is the day that the Torah was given”.  This means to say that even Reb Eliezer agrees with Reb Yehoshua that the Yom Tov of Shevuos should be split between eating and learning Torah.  According to all opinions, Shevuos must have a component of personal physical pleasure because it is the day that the Torah was given.  Practically speaking, this makes little difference because we pasken like Reb Yehoshua that every Yom Tov should be split this way.  Nevertheless, it is instructive to note that according to Reb Eliezer there is a unique quality to Shevuos, in that it requires personal pleasure due to the fact that it is the day of matan Torah

The meforshim ask a somewhat obvious question.  One would think that the day of matan Torah should require more Torah learning, not less.  How can it be that Reb Eliezer allows a person to spend all of Succos and Pesach learning Torah, but not all of Shevuos?  Why should the commemoration of matan Torah be a reason to interrupt Torah learning in order to eat and drink?[5]

The meforshim point out that Rashi’s comments address this issue.  Rashi explains that it is necessary to eat and drink on Shevuos in order "להראות שנוח ומקובל יום זה לישראל שנתנה תורה בו" – “To demonstrate that this day is pleasant and agreeable to Yisroel since the Torah was given on it”.  Rashi is saying that eating and drinking are necessary in order to demonstrate happiness to others.  Although the talmid chochom may well personally be happy learning Torah, this may not not be readily apparent to others.  He therefore needs to eat and drink so that other people should be aware of his happiness.  However, this itself needs an explanation.  Why is it uniquely necessary on Shevuos for a person to display his happiness to others?

In order to answer this question, we need to turn our attention to an incident that took place around the time of matan Torah.  The possuk states

“And Moshe and Ahron, Nadav and Avihu, and seventy of the zekeinim (elders) of Yisroel went up.  And they perceived the G-d of Yisroel and beneath His feet was like the form of sapphire brick and like the very heaven for clarity.  And upon the nobles of the Bnei Yisroel He did not lay His hand, and they beheld Hashem, and they ate and drank”.

According to Rashi, this event happened before matan Torah, on the fifth of SivanRashi understands that Nadav, Avihu and the zekeinim sinned by observing Hashem without the appropriate solemnity, after having eaten and having drunk.[6]  The Ramban disagrees and says that this event happened after matan Torah.  He explains that Nadav, Avihu and the zekeinim did not sin at all.  According to the Ramban, Nadav, Avihu and the zekeinim sacrificed a korbon shlomim after receiving the Torah.  When the possuk states that “they ate” it is referring to the eating of this korbon, and when it says that they “drank” it is referring to drinking as a celebration of the simcha of receiving the Torah.[7]

The Ramban explains that it is appropriate to observe a day of simcha and Yom Tov over kabolas HaTorah, and Nadav, Avihu and the zekeinim did so.  However, the Ramban does not explain why the rest of the Bnai Yisroel did not follow suit.  The Ksav Sofer addresses this question.[8]  He quotes the statement of Chazal (Shabbos daf 88a) that Hashem raised Har Sinai over the Bnai Yisroel and threatened to destroy them if they did not accept the Torah.  As Tosefos explains, even though the Bnai Yisroel had already proclaimed naaseh ve’nishma and willingly agreed to accept the Torah, they became terrified by the overwhelming experience of Har Sinai and needed to be forced by Hashem to follow through.[9]  The Gemara concludes that it was only at the time of the great miracle of Purim that Klal Yisroel fully accepted the Torah willingly, as indicated in Megillas Ester by the phrase “kiymu ve’kiblu hayehudim”.[10]

The Ksav Sofer writes that, at least to some extent, the Bnai Yisroel accepted the Torah through fear and coercion.  For this reason, they did not celebrate that day in the same way that Nadav, Aviyhu and the zekeinim did.[11]  Those people, who the Torah call “the nobles of the Bnai Yisroel”, accepted the Torah with full willingness and joy.  They celebrated that day with complete simcha, in a way that the rest of the Bnai Yisroel could not.

The Ksav Sofer concludes that on Shevuos we must ensure that we are accepting the Torah in the manner of Nadav, Avihu and the zekeinim.  We have to be mekabel the Torah with happiness and joy, rather than through fear and coercion.  This is why, according to all opinions, we must eat and drink and celebrate on Shevuos.  It is true that we could forgo this and spend all day learning Torah, but it would then seem that we are forgoing food due to worry and anxiety.  Our kabolas hatorah would be lacking in happiness and enthusiasm.  On Shevuos it is necessary to demonstrate that we are accepting the Torah willingly and lovingly.[12]

The Ksav Sofer is teaching us an important lesson here.  Part of the avodah of Shevuos is to make sure that we are mekabel the Torah with simcha.  We must show and publicize the satisfaction and pleasure of accepting the Torah.  A person who learns Torah all day may be doing so out of fear rather than love, and on Shevuos we must dine and celebrate in order to demonstrate that our Torah learning itself is an act of limud me’ahava.[13]

This brings to mind the teshuva of Rav Moshe Feinstein zt”l regarding teaching Torah in America.  Rav Moshe writes that “It is incumbent on the teacher of Torah subjects to ensure that the talmid internalize the teachings so deeply that the talmid feels in his heart and soul that this is the essence of life and that this is the true purpose of a person in the world …. that he knows that keeping mitzvos is more precious than all wealth and gold and all the pleasures of the world, because he thereby acquires eternal life of which one moment is better than all life of olam hazeh, as states in Avos chapter 4 mishna 17.  By this manner of pleasantly articulated learning, demonstrate the difference between those who crave matters of olam hazeh and those who yearn for Torah and serving Hashem Yisborach, until it enters their heart and makes them Bnei Torah, so that their attitude to worldly life and their desire and longing will be in matters of Torah and mitzvos, and they will not feel any nisayon at all”.[14]

Rav Moshe continues, “I have already said numerous times that there may be a person who keeps Torah and mitzvos.  However, not only do his children fail to learn from him to also observe the Torah and its mitzvos, he inadvertently teaches them chas ve’sholom the opposite.  When they see that their father, for example, considers shemiras Shabbos to be a nisayon because he could have done business and earned a large amount and refrained and did not do so, that is a tremendous shortcoming in the children’s chinuch.  As they consider it to be a nisayon, and not every person is strong enough to overcome his yetzer and withstand nisayon … this will cause the children to leave Hashem’s Torah.  However, the perceptive person who does not have any nisayon … because this is not a nisayon for someone who cherishes Shabbos … and he is happy that he was able to fulfill the mitzva … when his children see how much Shabbos is so cherished, that it equals all the silver and gold in the world, and in truth he does not lose out at all but on the contrary gains eternal life … this will influence them that they too will happily keep the mitzva of Shabbos and all mitzvos.  This is what every teacher needs to implant in the heart and soul of his talmidim, a complete faith and love and delight in Torah and its mitzvos, through their own personal conduct from which the talmidim learn so much, and from conversation with gentle and pleasant words, and from their relationship with them”.[15]

May we all feel true simcha in learning Torah and kiyum mitzvos, and be mekayem the possuk of
