'Separation will ensure our security and that of our grandchildren.'

Chairman of the Zionist Union Avi Gabbay spoke at The Jerusalem Post’s diplomatic conference about his ideas for the Middle East.

He praised the apparent intention of the US to officially recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, expressing his hope that “along with the recognition, the American administration will take steps in the Middle East to restart the peace process. It can happen. We should see it as something that can inspire negotiations.”

Gabbay also said that he sees “the two state solution for two people as the solution for our security. He claimed the two state solution would “keep Israel democratic” while “enabling us to keep the Jewish spirit of our nation.”

“I believe in separation. Such a separation will ensure our security and that of our grandchildren. I don’t believe in saying in advance what we will give. We should have no preconditions, but we have to build trust. If we don’t build trust, there is almost no probability for successful negotiations afterwards.”

At the same time, he emphasized that “both sides need to take steps to build this trust. From the Palestinian side,” he said, this would entail “stopping the incitement in the PA,” as “this is the major obstacle [preventing] the trust of Israelis in the peace process.”
