A Baltimore police detective was hurt in a shooting in west Baltimore on Wednesday afternoon.
The shooting happened at around 4:30 p.m. in the 900 block of Bennett Place. Sources told the 11 News I-Team that the detective was shot in the head and gravely wounded.
The officer has not yet been identified, but sources say he is an 18-year veteran. At the time, he and his partner were canvassing for information on a case. At some point, they encountered a man who pulled out a gun, shot the officer and fled, according to sources.
In the midst of the manhunt, police have information of a shooting victim who checked himself into an area hospital who they believe may be linked to the shooting.
That block is no stranger to violence. There have been four homicides in the last year on that block alone.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives said special agents from the ATF's Baltimore Field Division are at the scene to assist police. Tactical officers are on the scene as well.
The officer was taken to Shock Trauma. His wife, who lives out of town, was being escorted to the scene by Pennsylvania state troopers. While a Pennsylvania State Police vehicle has arrived at Shock Trauma, it's not entirely clear if she has arrived.. Mayor Catherine Pugh, State's Attorney Marilyn Mosby, gubernatorial special adviser Keiffer Mitchell, police Commissioner Kevin Davis, police command staff and Fraternal Order of Police Lodge No. 3 President Gene Ryan have arrived at the hospital.
A man in the area told 11 News that he heard four gunshots in the area.
A number of roads are shut down due to the search. Two law enforcement vehicles headed to the scene were involved in an unrelated collision nearby, which has also hamstrung traffic.
