The Justice Ministry has blocked the initiative of Internal Security Minister Gilad Erdan (Likud) to exempt security prisoners from a High Court ruling that stipulated increased living area for prisoners, Haaretz reported.

This precedent-setting ruling by the High Court was made last June, with the order to increase the area allotted to each prisoner to three square meters by March 2018 and to four-and-a-half square meters by the end of that year.

As part of an attempt to meet the timetable, Erdan promoted legislation whereby security prisoners would be excluded from the ruling, so that their prison standards would not be altered.

The decision to disqualify the initiative was approved by Attorney General Avihai Mandelblit.

One solution for expanding living space in security wings is transferring a large number of security prisoners to internment tents. Already some prisoners in Ketziot Prison are housed in tents.
