A severe thunderstorm watch is in effect for most of Maryland on Friday, July 14. Some counties have been under warnings as storm cells roll through the region. In addition, weather officials have issued a heat advisory for metro areas.
The National Weather Service issued Friday's severe thunderstorm watch at 1:40 p.m., effective until 9 p.m.
A severe thunderstorm watch means conditions are favorable for producing storms that could be accompanied by strong winds and hail.
Officials are calling for possible lightning, golf ball-sized hail and 70 mph wind gusts.
The severe thunderstorm watch area includes Allegany, Anne Arundel, Baltimore, Calvert, Caroline, Carroll, Cecil, Charles, Frederick, Harford, Howard, Kent, Montgomery, Prince George's, Queen Anne's, St. Mary's, Talbot and Washington counties as well as Baltimore City.
After 2 p.m., two-way operations at the Bay Bridge were suspended due to a storm moving through the area, the Maryland Transportation Authority reported.
In addition to the watch, weather authorities issued a heat advisory for the Baltimore-D.C. metro area until 7 p.m. on Friday since temperatures may hit 105 degrees on the heat index.
Isolated thunderstorms with damaging wind gusts and possible instances of flooding could occur Friday across Maryland, D.C. and parts of Virginia, the National Weather Service said in a hazardous weather statement.
