Neighborhood leaders from northwest Baltimore City expand impact of Chesapeake Bay volunteer cleanup efforts at Western Run stream

(May 8, 2017 – Baltimore, MD) CHAI: Comprehensive Housing Assistance Inc., an Agency of The Associated: Jewish Community Federation of Baltimore and The Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay announced their combined efforts to clean up Western Run stream, a part of the Chesapeake Bay watershed, in a unified day of service this spring as a part of the Alliance’s annual Project Clean Stream. Project Clean Stream (PCS) is the largest stream cleanup event in the Chesapeake Bay region. The partnership between the two organizations will help to rally even more volunteers, will raise awareness of the event and will increase the impact of local volunteer efforts in northwest Baltimore.

Volunteers are needed Sunday, May 21 from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. at Cross Country Elementary School.

CHAI's mission is to strengthen neighborhoods with a significant Jewish presence by developing and enhancing housing, affecting community development, and supporting aging-in-community. CHAI’s community organizing efforts foster a stronger community bond where community members learn and grow with one another and are a part of positive sustainable changes in the neighborhoods of Cheswolde, Cross Country, Fallstaff, Glen and Mt. Washington.

“The Western Run stream physically and symbolically touches and connects all the residents of the five neighborhoods in CHAI’s primary focus community,” States CHAI CEO, Mitch Posner.  “I can think of no better way for our community to come together than to spend a few hours working to clean up this beautiful natural centerpiece which reflects on all of us and our shared environment.”

Project Clean Stream not only teaches volunteers about how their daily habits can impact their local waterway, but it also aims to instill values of environmental stewardship in participants of the project. Their efforts help to improve local water quality and restore the overall health of the Bay. Through their actions, volunteers gain a deeper appreciation for the critical need to care for the environment and to keep their local streams healthy.

“Building strong partnerships is one of the Alliance’s core values. We believe that our strength is in the diversity of voices we bring together. Through Project Clean Stream, the Alliance can team up with hundreds of organizations and groups from across the Chesapeake Bay watershed to host cleanup events. We wouldn’t be able to host a successful Project Clean Stream each year without the vital support of our partners.” said Ted Wolfe, Alliance Project Clean Stream Coordinator.
