The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning; up to a foot of snow may fall in some areas by Tuesday evening.

A winter storm warning has been issued Monday night through Tuesday afternoon for several Maryland jurisdictions. The National Weather Service issued the warning, which means severe winter weather conditions are expected that will make travel dangerous.

The warning is effective from 7 p.m. on Monday to 2 p.m. on Tuesday.

It calls for snow, with accumulations between 8 to 12 inches. Weather officials say that north-central Maryland will see the greatest accumulations.

Baltimore, Carroll, Frederick, Harford, Howard, Montgomery and Washington counties are under the winter storm warning.

Heavy snow is expected to fall on power lines and trees, possibly causing outages and making roads impassable. Snow is expected to start Monday night and fall through Tuesday, the National Weather Service advised.

"Only travel in an emergency," the National Weather Service advised in the winter storm warning. "If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency."

Temperatures will be in the lower 30s with wind gusts up to 25 mph.

The winter storm warning takes the place of a winter storm watch, which weather officials issue when a storm is further out.
