Seven Baltimore Police Officers Indicted On Federal Racketeering Charges

Federal authorities announced racketeering charges against seven Baltimore Police officers on Wednesday, with accusations including robberies, filing false affidavits, and making fraudulent overtime claims.

Another officer is also charged in a separate drug distribution indictment.

Maryland U.S. Attorney Rod J. Rosenstein said the officers were involved in "a pernicious conspiracy scheme that included abuse of power," conduct he said "tarnishes the reputation of all police officers."

Rosenstein said the officers, all members of a special gun task force, had stopped and robbed citizens who had committed no crimes.

The investigation of the officers began about a year ago, and involved electronic surveillance, Rosenstein said — including a recording device placed in a Baltimore Police vehicle.
