Washngton, D.C. - Nov 4, 2025  - The Senate on Tuesday failed to reopen the federal government for the 14th time, as the shutdown tied with the 2018-19 closure as the longest in U.S. history.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) indicated Monday that he was “optimistic” the federal government will reopen by the end of the week. But Democrats are divided on how to make a deal to end it.

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is still top of mind for lawmakers after the administration on Monday told a federal judge it would partially fund benefits amid the shutdown. President Trump on Tuesday, however, signaled he would not be funding the program until the government reopens.

Across the country, voters in New York, Virginia, New Jersey and California, among other places, are heading to the polls to cast ballots in elections that will shed light on how Americans feel about President Trump’s second term to date and the Democratic Party. Here’s what you should watch for.

Some lawmakers are hoping Tuesday’s Election Day is the hurdle standing in the way of reopening the government.

Several high-profile figures on both sides of the aisle are also mourning the late Vice President Cheney on Tuesday, after his family announced he died Monday at age 84.

President Trump has nothing on his public schedule on Tuesday. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt will brief the press at 1 p.m. EST.
