Balimore, MD - July 7, 2025 - Tropical Depression Chantal is trekking northward, bringing the potential for heavy rain and flash flooding to Maryland, weather forecasters said.

The National Hurricane Center forecasts the storm will drench some areas on Monday while largely sparing others. Towns closest to Chesepeake Bay will bear the brunt of the storm.

The southern portion of the ba could get up to 2 inches of rain, while isolated areas on the Eastern Shore could tally 4 inches of rain by 8 a.m. Tuesday.

Moderate rip currents are expected in Ocean City and on Assateague Island through at least Tuesday.

Most areas adjacent to Chesapeake Bay have at least a 15% chance of flash flooding by 8 a.m. Tuesday. Nearly all other parts of the state have at least a 5% chance of flash flooding.

"Flash flood concerns continue across portions of south-central and eastern Virginia, southern and eastern Maryland, Delaware, southern New Jersey, and southeastern Pennsylvania. Isolated to scattered flash flooding are possible (particularly within more urbanized areas," the National Hurricane Center said. "Life-threatening surf and rip currents conditions are expected to continue at beaches along the U.S. East Coast from northeastern Florida to the Mid-Atlantic states during the next day or so. Beach goers should heed the advice of lifeguards and local officials."

Chantal peaked as a tropical storm, but later weakened to a tropical depression.

As of 5 a.m. Monday, Chantal was located near the Virginia-North Carolina border. It was moving northeast at 15 mph with maximum sustained winds of 30 mph.

Baltimore City and every county that touches the bay are under a flood watch until 6 p.m. Monday.

The National Weather Service warned that "Excessive runoff may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations. Flooding may occur in poor drainage and urban areas."

"The remnants of Chantal will bring showers and some thunderstorms to locations along the Chesapeake Bay from late morning through the afternoon," the NWS said in its flood watch. "There may be embedded slow-moving areas of heavy rain which will be capable of producing rain rates of 2-3 inches in an hour or two. A localized total up to 5 inches is possible. These rain amounts may lead to flash flooding."

hazardous weather outlook also covers eastern Howard County, southeastern Montgomery County, all of Prince George's County and all of Charles County.
