Baltimore, MD - June 30, 2025 -  Voluntary water restrictions issued in May across parts of the Baltimore area have since been lifted, the Baltimore City Department of Public Works announced Monday.

In coordination with Baltimore, Carroll, Harford and Howard counties, the city DPW announced it has lifted the voluntary water restrictions for residents who are served by the local public water supply.

The restrictions were implemented amid historically low water levels at Liberty Reservoir, one of the region's primary drinking water sources. Water levels at Liberty Reservoir had dropped to their lowest level in almost 20 years.

The DPW cited record-setting rainfall in May — the wettest May since 2018 — that contributed to replenishing water levels at the Liberty, Loch Raven and Prettyboy reservoirs to near-normal levels.

In addition to the voluntary restrictions, the DPW said it reduced the draw from Liberty at the Montebello and Ashburton water filtration plants, as well as increased reliance on the Loch Raven Reservoir.

Even with improved conditions, the DPW emphasized responsible water use year-round, saying the conservation of water helps safeguard the region's long-term supply and can reduce water bills.

The DPW suggests the following everyday water-saving tips:

The DPW said leaks are one of the largest sources of water waste. Residents are encouraged to report any signs of running water that may indicate a leak or water main break.

How to report a water main break or leak:

Anne Arundel County does not receive water from Baltimore City, as the county's water comes from underground aquifers.
