Baltimore, MD - June 24, 2025 - Today, the Department of Public Works (DPW) halted trash and recycling collections at 3:30 PM due to excessive heat. The impacted routes are located on the city’s westside. In addition, DPW’s Recycling Drop-Off Centers and the Northwest Transfer Station will close early at 5:00 PM.
The safety of DPW employees is a top priority as the city experiences prolonged high temperatures this week. In response to the extreme heat, DPW is adjusting operations to protect frontline workers and comply with Maryland Occupational Safety and Health (MOSH) heat-related illness prevention guidelines. DPW’s Heat Illness Prevention Plan (HIPP) is currently active and informs the department’s daily approach to worker safety. As temperatures exceed 90 degrees, DPW may continue to modify trash and recycling collection schedules—or temporarily suspend services—if conditions make it unsafe to continue outdoor work.
Given the anticipated heat throughout the week, some crews may opt to begin their routes earlier than usual. Residents are encouraged to set their trash and recycling out the night before scheduled collection days.

Residents may notice crews operating at different times than usual or brief delays in service throughout the week. These adjustments are necessary to ensure the health and well-being of sanitation workers while maintaining essential operations.
We appreciate your patience and understanding as we work to protect our workforce while continuing to provide essential services.
