Congressional Representatives Call For End To BGE Rate Hikes

Baltimore, MD - Mar. 1,2025 - Reps. Kweisi Mfume, Johnny Olszewski, and Sarah Elfreth called for an end to utility rate hikes in letters to the Maryland Public Service Commission (PSC) and the Baltimore Gas and Electric Company (BGE).

“We are writing to communicate our extreme concern and disappointment as we continue to receive more and more testimonials from our constituents faced with skyrocketing BG&E costs after the 2025 utility rates increase granted by the Maryland Public Service Commission. In the most simple terms, many of our constituents are unable to afford the rate hikes thrust upon them,” the lawmakers wrote.

The lawmakers say they've received numerous messages from constituents struggling to balance their budgets amid the utility price increases.

A statement announcing the letter noted that "seniors, lower income Marylanders, and individuals living on a fixed income are most impacted by the rate increases."
