Baltimore, MD - Feb. 12, 2025 - The Maryland Realtors said a new survey showed housing affordability is the No. 1 concern for people in the state, surpassing taxes and crime for the first time in history.

The state’s shortage of affordable housing units has nearly doubled in the last five years, according to Maryland Realtors president Cherly Abrams Davis, who puts the blame on local governments.

“Even after 2024’s landmark legislation, some local governments continue to drag their feet to open housing opportunities in their communities,” Davis said.

Realtors are pushing for alternative housing options like “Accessory Dwelling Units,” which are independent units built on existing properties like guest houses.

Davis said their survey found 81% of Marylanders support making it easier to build them.
