President Donald Trump signed an executive order Thursday mandating the release of records related to the assassinations of former President John F. Kennedy, civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. and former Sen. Robert F. Kennedy.
The attorney general and national intelligence director, in coordination with the council to the president and assistant for national security affairs, must present a plan for the records pertaining to former President Kennedy’s assassination to be released by Feb. 7.
A plan for the release of records regarding the killings of King Jr. and former Sen. Kennedy must be presented by March 9.
The president said any continued withholding and redaction of the documents for former President Kennedy is “not consistent with the public interest,” adding that the release is long overdue.
“And although no Act of Congress directs the release of information pertaining to the assassinations of Senator Robert F. Kennedy and the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., I have determined that the release of all records in the Federal Government's possession pertaining to each of those assassinations is also in the public interest,” the executive order reads.
