Boeing machinists who recently voted to end a seven-week strike, are all expected to return to work by Nov. 12.
While 33,000 machinists will now be working under a new labor contract that includes a 38% pay raise over four years, the company has also announced that layoffs will be happening. This adds new uncertainty for the company's employees.
Circulating reports suggested the layoff notices could go out as early as this week.
"Most affected U.S. employees will be notified mid-November and leave the company on Jan. 17,"said a Boeing spokesperson. "We are supporting these teammates with additional resources such as severance pay and career transition services."
Boeing has 170,000 employees, and 10% of the workforce, 17,000 workers, will be affected by this round of cuts.
An IAM District 751 Union spokesperson told KOMO News on Sunday that they did not have any information about the upcoming layoffs.
Boeing's CEO said the company has incurred losses of $25 billion since 2019. It has also encountered safety issues, whistleblower reports, and intense scrutiny over company culture during congressional hearings.
So far, Boeing officials have declined to say which job titles will be impacted during the layoffs.
