Baltimore, MD - Oct. 13, 2024  - Lane closures on the Baltimore Beltway will now take place during the day.

Here’s the deal:

Starting Monday, crews will start to intermittently close a left lane of the Beltway in each direction between Interstate 70 in Woodlawn and the Stevenson Road overpass. The closures will take place during off-peak daytime hours, according to the Maryland State Highway Administration.

The off-peak lane closures will continue through spring 2025, weather permitting.

Crews will also work on the Beltway between the Interstate 83 interchanges for the Jones Falls Expressway and the Baltimore-Harrisburg Expressway.

Starting Monday, motorists should expect heavy traffic during off-peak daytime hours on the west and north sides of the Beltway and plan extra commuting time, the SHA said.

The SHA will use variable speed limit signs and automated speed enforcement cameras in the affected areas.

Why:

The SHA’s Interstate 695 Transportation Systems Management and Operations project will convert the existing median shoulder into a rush-hour travel lane.

The median work includes adding highway drainage systems and power and communications conduits, as well as installing overhead lane marker gantries.

The project is intended to improve reliability and reduce congestion on the heavily traveled portion of the Beltway between the I-70 and White Marsh Boulevard exits.

But that’s not all:

Work continues in the HalethorpeArbutus area on the 10 Bridges Project, where crews are rehabilitating and preserving 10 bridges that comprise the Beltway interchange with Interstate 95. This construction work continues through 2026 with overnight lane closures.
