Jerusalem, Israel - Oct. 10, 2024 - The rescheduled Israel Police Commemoration memorial event was held on Wednesday, October 9th, at the Friends of Zion Museum in Jerusalem, Israel.
The evening honored the fallen police heroes of October 7, 2023. Candles were lit in their memory and the program started with all guests standing for Kel Maleh Rachamim.
Israel Police International Spokesperson Dean Elsdunne acted as Master of Ceremonies. He also translated for the bereaved mother of fallen officer Dan Ganot z"l who told of her work to speak to schoolchildren about her son and the importance of police work.
Fascinating were the police experts explaining the crucial and difficult work of identification carried out in the subsequent days, weeks, and months. Former Jerusalem Post editor-in-chief Avi Mayer moderated the panel discussion.
On October 7, 2023, 59 Israeli police officers lost their lives in a 50-hour effort to stop the Hamas terrorists from invading further into Israel. There are many stories of acts of heroism. One should remember the Israeli police force includes Muslims, Bedouins, and Druze, a representation of the diverse population. Thousands of lives were saved due to the Israel Police response and efforts.
As with most recent events, a yellow chair was in the front row, empty to symbolize waiting for hostages to return.
