Baltimore, MD - Sept. 18, 2024 - The Justice Department has filed a civil claim in the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland against Singaporean corporations Grace Ocean Private Limited and Synergy Marine Private Limited.
This follows months after the Dali cargo ship struck the Francis Scott Key Bridge on March 26, causing it to collapse and the tragic deaths of six people in Baltimore.
The suit seeks over $100 million in costs incurred by the U.S. for recovery efforts, including clearing the wreckage that obstructed the Port of Baltimore. Attorney General Merrick B. Garland emphasized the importance of holding the responsible parties accountable, stating that taxpayers should not bear the financial burden.
Recovery operations involved multiple agencies, removing around 50,000 tons of debris and reestablishing navigable channels by June 10. Principal Deputy Associate Attorney General Benjamin C. Mizer criticized the ship’s operators for negligence, highlighting their awareness of power issues that contributed to the disaster.
U.S. Attorney Erek L. Barron noted the cultural significance of the Key Bridge and affirmed that those responsible will face accountability.
“In so many ways, the Key Bridge has symbolized the resilience of both the State of Maryland and our Nation,” Barron said. “In a very real way, the Key Bridge was a pathway to the American dream. A part of our culture is gone. Those responsible for the Key Bridge collapse will be held accountable.”
The lawsuit also seeks punitive damages to deter future negligence. This action follows a separate claim from the Dali’s owners, seeking to limit their liability to approximately $44 million.
The case is ongoing, and the claims are currently allegations pending court determination.
