Baltimore, MD - Aug. 24, 2024  - (WMAR2News) As schools across Maryland resume for the new academic year, traffic is expected to increase, and so are concerns for student safety. Last year, there were thousands of violations reported where drivers illegally passed school buses with red flashing lights, putting students at risk. In Carroll County alone, 5,084 citations were issued, while Howard County reported nearly double that number with 9,554 violations. Maryland state law requires drivers to stop at least 20 feet away from a stopped school bus with flashing red lights, with divided highways being the only exception. Authorities urge drivers to be vigilant and comply with these regulations to ensure the safety of students.
