Baltimore, MD - Aug. 13, 2024 - A prominent Maryland congressman suffered a mild ischemic stroke.

U.S. Rep. Steny Hoyer, D-District 5, suffered a mild ischemic stroke on Sunday night and sought medical treatment, according to a statement released Tuesday by the congressman's deputy chief of staff, Margaret Mulkerrin.

"Mr. Hoyer has responded well to treatment and has no lingering symptoms. He expects to resume his normal schedule next week. Mr. Hoyer's wife and family extend their deepest thanks to his medical team," Mulkerrin wrote.

An ischemic stroke involves blocked blood flow to the brain, and about 87% of strokes are ischemic, according to the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute.

Hoyer, 85, has served in the House since 1981 and is the most senior member of the House Democratic Caucus. He has held various leadership positions, including House majority leader.
