Baltimore, MD -- July 29, 2024  - Supporters of a Baltimore City charter amendment trying to protect city parks from the redevelopment of Harborplace face a deadline Monday.

Monday is the deadline to submit petition signatures for charter amendments. They are about 2,500 signatures short of the minimum 10,000 needed.

The measure is aimed at stopping developer David Bramble from building luxury high rise apartments on the site of Harborplace. If approved, it would protect 20 city parks.

“When we were doing research, we found there was only one park in Baltimore City that was protected in the charter of Baltimore, and that was the Inner Harbor. All the other parks in Baltimore were not protected by any kind of rules and they were not even mentioned in our city charter,” said Brent Bederka, an organizer.

The group is led by former mayoral candidate Thiru Vignarajah.
