Baltimore, MD - July 26, 2024  - Nearly four dozen police departments from multiple Maryland counties and cities will join state police this weekend to increase patrols and crack down on speeding drivers, officials said Thursday.

The high-visibility enforcement event plans to specifically target speeders in hopes of decreasing crashes and improving safety on Maryland roads, state Motor Vehicle Administration officials said in a news release.

"We are asking all Marylanders to give themselves plenty of time to reach their destination and to please slow down," Motor Vehicle Administrator Chrissy Nizer said in a statement. "Speeding will only increase your chances of not getting to your destination at all."

The following agencies will be participating in the enforcement event, officials said:

Excessive speeding is estimated to be a contributing factor in more than one-third of all fatal crashes nationwide, state officials said. The probability of death or serious injury grows significantly at higher speeds, doubling for every 10 mph over 50 mph that a vehicle travels.

By driving within the speed limit, drivers allow themselves more time to react to what is happening around them, state officials said.
