Baltimore, MD - July 8, 2024  - Recent developments both locally in Baltimore and nationally/internationally illustrate the continued growth of the kosher market.

MARKET MAVEN, PART 1: POP-UP

Market Maven (1630 Reisterstown Rd, Pikesville, MD 21208, (410) 844-8000) brings back its “Pop Up” restaurant menu, offering a range of delicatessen offerings they are calling “Southern Style BBQ.” More recently these were paired with sides such as french fries, but now those are sold separately. Personally, I like it that way, don’t want to necessarily pay for something I may not want. Of course, this represents a slight increase in pricing, but what isn’t more expensive nowadays? I’ve thought that their “Pop-Up” offerings were solid for the price in the past and ordering and pickup were quick and easy. If I had to choose something, I think the overnight brisket sub is where I’d headfirst. I’m glad Maven is able to stay afloat as it is always good to “lift all boats.”

THE CLUB

The Club (1500 Reisterstown Rd # 224, Pikesville, MD 21208, (410)504-8102) has totally reworked its menu and pricing, noticeably lowering prices and focusing its menu. I have yet to have a chance to get over to see my friends, Chef Dan and Mark, but people have been very pleased with the new changes. Props to The Club for working to improve, much to the benefit of the community and visitors.

COMING SOON YOSSEF’S LAFFA-MILIA

A new vegetarian falafel truck, Yossef’s Laffa-Milia, will soon be opening in the parking lot of Community Garage, across from Seven Mile Market, at 120 Reisterstown Road. The listed contact is (443) 340-8335 or yossefslaffamilia@gmail.com. According to their Facebook page, the “street food” truck will offer, “authentic Israeli flavors with our family-crafted falafel, hummus, & more, all wrapped up in tradition and love.” The Baltimore Falafel Wars are upon us. In my opinion, bring it on. The more the merrier.

NATIONAL BREAKING NEWS: SKITTLES LITTLES GO OU KOSHER!

Satisfying the demand of many kosher-keeping sweet tooths, OU Kosher now has listed that Skittles Littles are OU Pareve (also great pareve news!). Since about 2013, one has been able to get special-run kosher Skittles in Israel, or Israeli Skittles imported to America. Over the years, there has been some confusion and even unauthorized kosher symbols found, but happy days are here. Considering Skittles are vegan-friendly after changing its recipe from non-vegan gelatin, this kosher possibility never seemed like a stretch, but it’s always nice to see iconic brands seeing the need and benefit of kosher certification.
