Baltimore, MD - June 14, 2024 - Federal leaders met Thursday afternoon with business and industry partners following the reopening of the Port of Baltimore.

On Wednesday, 11 News Investigates reported exclusively that U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and White House officials would meet Thursday with companies about the port since the reopening of the Federal Channel.

Buttigieg and S. Lael Brainard, the director of the National Economic Council of the United States and a national economic adviser, heard the concerns of business and industry partners soon after the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed, and Thursday’s meeting was an effort to re-engage them now that the port is open, 11 News Investigates learned exclusively on Thursday.

Thursday’s meeting had a simple goal to get ship traffic back to the level it was before the bridge collapse.

Buttigieg thanked members of the group for stepping up to keep Maryland workers employed while the port was closed.

Buttigieg told 11 News on Wednesday that he expects cargo traffic to return to normal at the Port of Baltimore and that his department plans to enforce that with regulations.

“People will look back on this moment and the resilience that was shown and determination of Baltimore to come back stronger than ever,” Buttigieg said Wednesday afternoon.
