Hamas' refusal to release the rest of the women is why the truce fell apart, officials say.
Meanwhile, some of the loudest voices on women's rights are noticeably silent when it comes to Hamas using rape as a weapon against Israeli women. Critics are starting to call them out as new reports chronicle the horrific violence inflicted by Hamas on Oct. 7.
The Sunday Times published a collection of first-hand accounts that detailed the violence on women. Multiple sources detail trauma consistent with rape and sexual assault.
One man at the music festival recalled an attack he saw on one woman.
I saw this beautiful woman with the face of an angel and eight or ten of the fighters beating and raping her...when they finished they were laughing and the last one shot her in the head,” the witness said.
CNN’s Dana Bash pressed progressive Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal (D-Wash.) on the far left’s silence.
Jayapal responded to the question with a quick pivot to criticizing Israel. Bash pushed back.
"With respect, I was just asking about the women and you just turned it back to Israel. I’m asking you about Hamas," Bash said to Jayapal.
I already answered your question, Dana, I said it’s horrific," Jayapal responded. "However I think we have to be balanced about bringing in the outrages against Palestinians.
Critics are also slamming UN Women for taking 57 days to recognize the female victims of Oct. 7.
"Israeli women are the subject of collective international denial," said Dr. Kochav Elkayam Levi, Chair of the Civil Commission on Hamas’ Crimes Against Women and Children.
