As the race for City Hall heats up and questions loom over who is best suited to reduce crime in Baltimore, Mayor Brandon Scott says he is the person for the job.
“As we are all speaking today, Baltimore has a 19 percent reduction in homicides," said Mayor Scott.
That figure was about three years after Scott promised a reduction in homicides during his campaign.
Scott promised a 15 percent reduction in his first year in office, but that did not happen in the first or second year.
Now that it has, Scott is praising his leadership and crime reduction strategies.
However, political analyst John Dedie would disagree.
“I often tell me students this when the unemployment rate goes down, the president comes on the Rose Garden to announce the news," said Dedie.
Dedie says State's Attorney Ivan Bates has played a major role in that reduction.
With Ivan Bates in office, people realize, he’s not playing. And he’s going to do whatever it can to get people prosecuted and held accountable," said Dedie.
There is also U.S. Attorney Erek Barron, who took office in 2021.
“Something we’re doing in this past two years has been working," said Barron.
Since Barron's term, homicides and non-fatal shootings have seen a decline in Baltimore City.
