In light of the war in Gaza following the Hamas attack on southern Israel on October 7, residents of the Hamadan province in Iran, where the graves of Mordechai and Esther are located, burned Israeli flags and desecrated the site where the Biblical figures are buried.
The locals didn’t stop there and sent a letter to the Ministry of Culture in which they demanded to turn the place into a public site.
They claimed that the building should be turned into a "Museum of the crimes of the Zionist regime" and a public relations office with the "Palestinian resistance forces" should be established in the place.
The letter claims that the request is being submitted with the consent of the local Jews – which is untrue. "With the consent of the Jews living in Islamic Iran, this grave should be a public site like our other great and historic mosques, such as Isfahan and Shiraz's historic mosques, which are museums and places to visit.
"The residents of Iran and the world should be allowed to investigate and learn about it, and therefore the authorities are requested to move it with the consent of the Jews and change the status of the place from private to public before some people take advantage of the pure feelings of the people of Hamadan."
In response Jewish member of parliament Dr. Homayoon Sameh sent a letter to the Iranian government and asked for protection of the authorities. "The Jews in Iran feel firsthand the war between Israel and Hamas," claimed sources in the Jewish community. "There is a lot of stress and danger, and the situation is not good.
It was also added that synagogues in Iran are functioning on a limited basis in order to prevent unnecessary attention.
