Baltimore, MD - July 29, 2023 - After a tragic fire incident resulting in a resident's death in Baltimore last month, city leaders gathered to stress the importance of fire safety, reports WBALTV. The mayor, along with fire officials and the Red Cross, urged residents to have smoke detectors in their homes and create evacuation plans for fire emergencies. Baltimore Fire Chief-Designate James Wallace highlighted that a properly installed smoke detector can increase the chances of surviving a fire by almost 50%. Unattended cooking, smoking, and electrical issues are leading causes of house fires in the city. Mayor Brandon Scott emphasized the need for a fire safety conscious mindset and encouraged every home in Baltimore to have a working smoke detector and a fire safety plan. To support this initiative, the fire department offers free smoke detector installation through 311 for those who don't have one.
