Rav Gershon Edelstein, the Rosh Yeshiva of Ponovezh Yeshiva, celebrated his 100th birthday today, reports Matzav. Born in the Soviet Union in 1923, he immigrated to Eretz Yisroel in 1934 with his family. After initially studying Torah with his father and attending Lomza Yeshiva, Rav Gershon and his brother, Rav Yaakov, joined the newly established Ponevezh Yeshiva in 1943. Rav Gershon later taught Holocaust refugee students and was appointed as Rosh Mesivta of the Yeshiva in 1947. He was close to the Chazon Ish and became Rosh Yeshiva of Ponovezh after Rav Aharon Leib Shteinman's passing, sharing the leadership role with Rav Chaim Kanievsky.
