Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has decided not to fire Defense Minister Yoav Gallant (Likud), at least for the time being.

Netanyahu announced last Sunday that he had resolved to replace Gallant as security chief, a day after Gallant made a public statement calling on the government to freeze its judicial reform plan, despite having vowed to Netanyahu just two days earlier not to make such an appeal.

"We need a change in the legal system, but such changes are made through negotiation and discourse," Gallant said. "A victory for one of the parties will be a loss of the State of Israel. We must lead a participatory and unifying process."

"For the sake of Israel's security, the legislative process should be stopped, and negotiations should be held."

The prime minister was also reportedly incensed by Gallant’s timing, choosing to make the announcement Saturday night, while Netanyahu – who was abroad on a state trip to the UK – was unable to respond immediately with his own televised statement.

Since then, however, Netanyahu has yet to pen a letter to Gallant ending his tenure as Defense Minister, leaving the former general in limbo.

Sources close to the prime minister said Monday that “given the developing security situation, Prime Minister Netanyahu will deal with the matter of the defense minister only later on.”
