Jerusalem, Israel - Mar. 19, 2023 - Friday morning, March 17, 2023, the International Jerusalem Winner Marathon was held for the 12th time. International runners were back in Jerusalem for the first time since the 2019 Marathon, including Baltimore's Shomrei Emunah Congregation's Rabbi Binyamin Marwick and his son Moshe.
Some 40,000 people participated in the event, most of whom went past the Knesset, along the walls of the Old City, the Sultan's Pool, Mishkenot Sha'ananim, Mount Zion, the German Colony, Rehavia, Armon HaNatziv promenade, Ammunition Hill, Sacher Park, Mount Scopus, and Har HaZitim. Participants included 2,700 runners from 72 countries.
Alongside the many runners, Mayor Moshe Lion ran the 10-km run, wearing the number "10" and posed with ADI runners before their special shorter route. "Since its inception more than a decade ago, the Jerusalem Marathon has become one of the most exciting professional sporting events for every runner in Israel and around the world. I am proud that we were able to hold it again with great success. Today Jerusalem once again revved up its engines, launching many participants of all ages who have come to partake in Israel's biggest sporting event, held in Israel's athletic capital. I congratulate all Marathon runners and wish everyone a Happy Marathon. See you at the next Marathon, March 8, 2024," the Mayor said emphatically.
The full men's Jerusalem Marathon winner was Kiprotich Noah Kigen from Kenya, with a time of 2:18:13. Chakib Achgar Latrache, 34 from Spain, came in second at 2:25:45. In third place – Gamber Melakmo, 38 from Israel at 02:28:30.
Among the women, Njuguna Margaret 54 years old, from Kenya took the first place with a time of2:52:44. Elena Tolstykh, 39, from Russia came in second at 2:55:31. In third place – Noa Berkman, 34, from Israel, at 2:59:12.
The Winner International Jerusalem Marathon included six races: a full Marathon (42.195km), a half Marathon (21.1km), a 10-km run, a 5 km run, and a 1.7-km family run.
The Jerusalem "Winner" Marathon is also Israel's biggest Social Marathon, where a designated, 800-meter social run offers an opportunity for thousands to run in support of various social organizations that have partnered up with the Marathon.
The first place in the full Marathon race was awarded a prize in the amount of $3,750; the second place - was $2,500; and the third place - was $1,250.
The Jerusalem Marathon is more than the amount of prize money for runners, rather the runners raise money for dozens of good causes.
This year with visible security and medical support teams along the route, hundreds of Marylanders were seen running and supporting runners. Some of the teams participating and captured in the photo essay include Shalva, Yachad, ADI, The Michael Levin Base, Lema'an Achai, Crossroads, JustOne, United Hatzalah, Emunah, In Memory of Kay, Darkaynu, Koby Mandel, Yad L'Olim, OneFamily, Ari Fuld Project, Chai Lifeline, and NCSY.
