Annapolis, MD - Mar. 15, 2023 - Teach MD, a project of the Orthodox Union (“OU”), praised the Maryland General Assembly for taking critical first steps in the process of making student transportation more accessible to all students, including children attending Jewish and nonpublic students.

Delegates Dalya Attar and Dana Stein sponsored the innovative transportation proposal and stewarded it through this year’s legislative session, which is not yet over. A task force is expected to be created via legislation, to arrive at a transportation program supported by all stakeholders. This program will subsequently be proposed to the  legislature. Our delegates have been strong in their representation of Jewish communities and this development is a reflection of that.

A student transportation program will address a number of critical issues: environment, traffic, safety and workforce hours. (You can watch the sponsors and stakeholders and advocates testify at the hearings and express the need for the program, here 3:35.)

See Delegate Dalya Attar’s update here.

In 2023, Teach MD has joined champions in Annapolis including Agudath Israel of Maryland, which originated the transportation initiative with Baltimore legislators. Teach MD goals have been to advocate for a proposed school nurse program, an innovative student transportation program, the restoration of the BOOST program and will develop a nonpartisan voter outreach campaign. Stay tuned as session wraps up and programs like this one are finalized.
