Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said today (Friday) in a video speech at the Munich Security Conference that Ukraine has not yet received the "David's Slingshot" system from Israel but emphasized that he believes "it is only a matter of time" until that happens. He said that it will be used "against Goliath".
"David Slingshot" is a missile defense system that intercepts medium-range rockets and unmanned aircraft. Ukraine has requested the system from Israel several times since the beginning of the war.
Foreign Minister Eli Cohen tweeted in response to the speech: "As I promised, Israel will increase aid to Ukraine and assist it in its reconstruction efforts. I am sure that my visit will strengthen the ties between the countries."
Yesterday, Zelenskyy met with Foreign Minister Eli Cohen, in what was the first visit of an Israeli minister to Ukraine since the Russian invasion.
Cohen wrote after the meeting: "Just finished a meaningful and important meeting with the President of Ukraine. During the conversation, I emphasized that Israel strongly supports the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine. We also agreed that Iran's terrorist activity in Ukraine must be condemned and that severe practical steps must be undertaken by the international community. I assured him that Israel would expand the level of aid we provide, and that we would be partners in the reconstruction of Ukraine after the war."
Zelenskyy wrote: "Israel has always been our important partner in the Middle East. This is the first visit of an Israeli representative since the beginning of the full-scale invasion. During a meeting with Foreign Minister Eli Cohen we discussed deepening bilateral cooperation in various areas."
