The Baltimore City Council on Monday voted to allow council members to become eligible for pensions after they served for eight years.

The council came to a decision on the measure just before 6 p.m. The final vote was 8-5 with two abstentions.

The vote is in response to a term limit question passed earlier this month. It limited members of the council, along with the mayor and comptroller, to just two four-year terms.

Council members were originally eligible for pensions after they served for twelve years.

Jovani Patterson, leader of People for Elected Accountability and Civic Engagement, called on Mayor Brandon Scott to veto the bill.
