Airline passengers can now use their Maryland-issued mobile driver's license or mobile identification card in Apple Wallet to verify their identity at airport security screening, the Transportation Security Administration announced Wednesday.

TSA PreCheck travelers can use their mobile license or IDs at Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall and Ronald Reagan Washington National airports. Only passengers with TSA PreCheck added to their boarding pass will be eligible now. TSA said it plans to roll out the program to other passengers soon.

The effort comes in collaboration with the state of Maryland and Apple. Maryland joins Arizona as the second state to offer this feature.

Starting Wednesday, travelers with Maryland state-issued driver's licenses or state IDs can add a digital version to their iPhone's Apple Wallet for use at TSA airport security checkpoints if they are enrolled in and using TSA PreCheck.

"This marks another milestone in TSA's efforts to continue providing a secure and seamless airport security screening process at BWI," Christopher Murgia, TSA's federal security director for BWI-Marshall, said in a statement. "Mobile device technologies are continually evolving to provide a safer experience for residents, and TSA is committed to expanding use of these technologies wherever possible to enhance airport security and facilitate greater accuracy in identity verification at TSA checkpoints."

Travelers must have their mobile driver's license or state ID in the Apple Wallet before arriving at the TSA checkpoint in order to use it. There is a process to get confirmed.
