Barbara Goldberg Goldman resigned as deputy treasurer of the Maryland Democratic Party Monday after an email surfaced in which she questioned whether Black candidates are capable of winning statewide elections.

The blowback to her comments was fierce and fellow Democrats quickly sought to distance themselves from her words.

We do not condone or support the comments in her email. They do not represent the values of the Maryland Democratic Party. Maryland is the most diverse state on the east coast,” said Maryland Democratic Party Chair Yvette Lewis. “I am excited that our Gubernatorial candidates reflect this diversity. I also know that whoever emerges as our nominee will be a superb candidate and an outstanding Governor.

The controversy began Sunday, when Axios published an email which said Goldberg Goldman sent to “party insiders,” explaining why she was backing Democratic National Committee Chairman Tom Perez for governor, who is Dominican-American.

“So, my thinking beyond here is the age-old question: Which candidate(s) have a better chance in the General election of beating an attractive female Hogan team member for whom both Dems and Repubs have expressed genuine likability?” Goldberg Goldman wrote in the email, making an apparent reference to Republican gubernatorial candidate Kelly Schulz, who served in Gov. Larry Hogan's administration.

“Consider this: Three African-American males have run statewide for Governor and have lost,” she wrote. “Maryland is not a Blue state. It’s a purple one. This is a fact we must not ignore. In the last 20 years, only eight have been with a Democratic Governor.” She ended the email: “We need a winning team. IMHO.”
