A new document which has been distributed to all combat soldiers in the IDF includes a significant change in regulations, allowing soldiers to shoot terrorist stonethrowers or those who throw petrol bombs even while they are fleeing, as long as they are within the ‘conflict zone’, meaning immediately after the incident occurs.

Israel’s Kan news reported that the new regulations had been distributed recently in the IDF. A month ago the IDF decided on other changes including permission to shoot at thieves entering IDF bases and stealing weaponry from the armouries.

The changes come after criticism from IDF soldiers who said that it is impossible to define the exact moment when the petrol bomb or stones are thrown and therefore the current guidelines for opening fire did not allow troops to respond effectively when stones were thrown at them. According to the new guidelines troops will be able to respond even after the stonethrowing as long as they are within the conflict zone, enabling them to chase and to target those who are throwing the stones and other projectiles at them.

The new guidelines will help troops stationed at the Egyptian border who are forced to deal with smugglers looking to smuggle weapons over the border which are later sold to criminal and terrorist elements.
